One thing he should do is weigh himself before and after. This is a classic stunt that every paper sends the uppity cub reporter out to do, and they always say "oh man, it wasn't that hard. Pizza slice here, welfare burger from 7-11 there, yeah. I got hungry, sure, but it wasn't so bad." But I'd like to see one that did it for a month and weighed the same at the end as he did at the beginning.

Also, you'd see half these celebrities (at LEAST) if you told them that their cigarette budget had to come out of the food budget.

Also, while probably CAN eat on $1.50 or $2/day by buying in bulk (I dunno if that's what he's doing here), but actually poor people may not have the $10-15 to put down on the bulk food in the first place. I bring this up every time somebody tries to say it's so much cheaper to eat healthy foods than to eat unhealthy foods; if you have $4 and need to feed a family of four right now, it's the dollar menu at McD's, or cup noodles, or whatever.

Bingo. By the way, it's really difficult to eat well on that amount of money. That's why people either lose weight, or bulk up in fat. Because if you have to, you can make one box of generic Kraft Dinner stretch four meals, but you won't feel good enough to go for a run afterwards.

I remember doing this in high school and it wasn't that bad, prices have changed but it's still the same basic idea. Grab a 5 lb bag of Potatoes, a cheap loaf of bread, and 18 eggs and that would only come out to $4 of the $10.50 weekly budget and is about enough for 1 person to eat everyday for a week. The problem with stuff like this where you're only doing it for x days a $1 jar of peanut butter is going to last 2 weeks same with the matching Jelly so the weeks use it's ~$1 for a weeks worth of both. Throw in another $1.50 for a head of lettuce and salad dressing and since that's kinda high a top Ramen or two. You have just over 4 bucks left and Breakfast taken care of (skillet potatoes, 2/3 eggs, 1/2 pieces of toast) lunch taken care of (PB&J + Salad + optional ramen) and everything but the main part of dinner (salad/potato) with a bit of luck you can turn that remaining money into about 5 pounds of chicken so 2/3rds per night kinda low but again not awful and not starving. Hell if you coupon hunted long enough you could even fit a weeks worth of rice into the budget pretty easy for some variety.

I'm guessing he'd have a fair amount of success employing the "I'm Ben Affleck Method," which basically entails going into dining establishments and saying, "I'm Ben Affleck. Want to give me a free sandwich?"

My food budget is only $50.00 a month, and while I'd never be so presumptuous as to advise Mr. Affleck on what he should do, I can speak to what he will most likely have to do.

Rice and beans. He's going to eat plenty of these, every day in fact, or at least until the sight of makes him nauseous. He will agonize over the profligacy of sauce and the hideous luxury of flavor. He will gaze longingly at soaking lentils. He will consider, at great length, eating the peel of the weekly reward-banana. He will extract every last atom of bargain peanut butter from the jar with the precision of an watchmaker. Eventually he will break down and purchase a Hershey bar with a handful of loose change, and guilty tears will streak his face. He will notice at everyone around him is eating all the time, and he will hate and envy them.

Damn, I thought living off of mostly Ramen noodles was bad. But you make that sound downright terrible!

Are these people going to do the things actual poor people do, like go to food banks and church suppers?
