Not good enough. Reddit should not allow its forums to be used for investigating crimes.

I asked what measures administrators are taking to keep this from happening again on Reddit here. I'll update if I get a response.

Reddit should and will allow its users to do whatever it wants so long as it is legal.

The idiots in the press, a category that Gawker is sadly not exempt from, should not be taking their stories on a national manhunt from a bunch of folks on the internet.

I mean, Gawker would not be nearly as profitable without sourcing a lot of their content from Reddit, but when it comes to actual speculative information? It's wholly irresponsible for CNN and the Post or any media outlet to take unverified speculation from kids and equally clueless adults on a fucking internet message board.

This image is the single best thing about Boston coverage since the news that the last suspect was taken into custody.

PS Pissed my Kinja URL is raincoaster5 instead of raincoaster. How many of me are there? At least six I know of. I wish we were all still speaking to one another...sniff.

The best part about the whole exercise was that in all their blaming every brown, tanned, robed, and person-standing-on-roofs not a single person fingered the actual bombers until the FBI released the info on who they were looking for.

Here is an interesting detail that is not mentioned in the apology: Reddit administrators actively censored the /r/findbostonbombers subreddit where most of the shabby detective work took place.

The subreddit was shut down on April 15th after it had been churning out bad information for a number of days. But it wasn't just the decision of the users who created the subreddit. According user Oops777, who founded it, "The admins advised that we shold consider making it private or deleting it." And when the site was shut down, it was blacked out with a screen that said "/r/bostonbombers is no longer accessible." This was also done by Reddit administrators, according to Oops777.

So, Martin's suggestion that Reddit's employees have no control over what Redditors do, and it's up to Redditors to "be sensitive of its own power," is bullshit. In fact Reddit actively censored the Boston Bombing section after it became embarrassing to Reddit. For some reason, I suspect that there will be less outcry from users over this censorship than when administrators censored the Jailbait section dedicated to posting sexy photos of underaged girls. Draw your own conclusions about Reddit from this fact.

Why should Reddit have to apologize? Why is anyone with authority even listening to them?? People are allowed to speculate all they want; they're called conspiracy theorists.

I was reading the thread and saw some of the posts about Sunil. The moderators deleted any mention of his name and people posted frequently how we shouldn't jump to conclusions. How WOULD Reddit prevent this from happening again? It's just a message board where people post about stupid shit and every now and then something interesting actually pops up. People posted about Sunil in the comments section at Gawker, did you really control that? Gawker actually posted his name in an article, naming him a suspect. Well at least tons of people know what the kid looks like now, if on the off chance he didn't kill himself then maybe they will find him. Pretty unlikely, but there's that at least.

Why not post about the 9 threads that covered the confrontation and eventual capture of the bombers? Reddit was anywhere from 30 minutes to ine hour ahead of the news media. I knew the police were in a confrontation with the two brothers and that Jahar was in a boat way before CNN or any othercrews channel did. It was a pretty freaky weekend.
