I am ok with discriminatory hiring practices. Including this and media companies refusing to hire white people (see cbc, bbc, etc). If their hiring practices are overly discriminatory that will hurt the company.

Many media/movie/tv companies are visually discriminatory keeping vast swaths of the public from ever applying from any individual roles.

Old news - this had been going on for a while now. Links from a couple of years ago:

God, I haven’t gone to Slashdot in ages. Is it still a thing or have people moved on to other tech sites?

which involves chatting them up, coordinating social activities, and even giving them massages

    1. Sounds like a modified tech version of a Geisha, and before I get a “but they’re”...yes, I know Geisha’s are from the Japanese culture, but the duties to entertain males and have a certain ‘look’ kind of has a similar ring to it.

Her colleague Feng, however, appeared cynical about the notion of male programmer motivators. “A man chatting with another man, it’s like going out on a date with a guy,”

    2. Lol, I think Mr. Feng needs read into that a bit more, cause I’d guess the female programmer was suggesting there should be a similar option for them.

I’m just curious to see where something like this is going to pop up as a suggestion in the states...given the current political environment, I’d hardly be shocked.

Maybe if they hired some lady programmers, the programming would get done.

So first the Korean e-Sports harassment thing, and now this. Though none of this is news, especially for the China thing.

Asian country patriarchy...some of you on that Korean article were like, oh we gotta reject this stuff in all forms whether home or abroad. I’m actually more surprised this isn’t showing up on Jezebel as yet another reason to rail against the patriarchy, but maybe well - this is happening in China, not America, and good luck taking a certain movement from here to there, where the Communist Party rules.

“Non-approved” protests are stamped out pretty quick.

The job sounded like a secretary up until the massage...

We definitely need to bring the motivator job classification to the US and not just in programming. ;)

What’s that term people use for when a woman tries to appeal to men by throwing themselves and all other women under a bus all while by acting like a sexiest piece of shit too?

I’ve been to Beijing and Shanghai several times for work. I’ve experienced this type of service / help under in hotels and business environments... And no, they are not whores...

Even though I did not get a massage, (maybe I should’ve ask for one), the general attitude of service to others was there, not just from workers and general help, but from engineers and secretaries (male and female).

It is a different culture, one most Americans are not accustomed to.

How are “programmer motivators” any different from “footballer motivators” a.k.a. Cheerleaders?

Sounds messed up – especially given that they’re required to have certain physical characteristics, massage people, and actually are educated and qualified in their own right although they’re being reduced to “entertainment for the real programmers!”.

Throw it in to the shitty pile up with silicon valley startups hiring models to wander around and chat up people at company events. Different, yes. But not by much.

The Chinese regime is going full Orwell and full Huxley at the same time.

That is, if she can prevent the trifecta of time bombs she created with her one-child policy from going off.

But at least those women are not killed at birth like they used to be before. Maybe we can call that progress?
