Judges in the US have to hear shitty traffic cases? In Canada, they’re heard by Justices of the Peace, AKA political patronage appointees who are likely to not know one single thing about the law. They also preside over all bail hearings other than murder bails, which is somewhat disturbing.

Yep, which is just another win for US over North Montana.

Agreed. Whoever had their cases heard by this clerk got a better adjudicator than they would have in Canada.

Agreed, think of all the time and money the country could save if we just let internet commentators decide cases.

There is nothing that makes judges more qualified than lawyers. Judges don’t go to judge school.

Judges are just former lawyers who campaigned (and won) enough votes to become appointed judges.

If you’re an attorney who lacks the necessary appointment or election outcome required, you are unqualified to be a judge.

You know, if the clerk was a “lifer” as a clerk, I could kind of see how this might happen (i.e., wacky judge says, “here, why don’t you take the bench for a couple cases,” and clerk who has no greater aspirations says, “Why not?”), but given that the clerk was running for a judgeship herself, this is particularly baffling. Because even if the judge was a complete nut job, you’d think the clerk would be on guard for committing any sort of ethical/legal infractions that could tank her judgeship.

Sort of like the bomber pilot who lets a waist gunner take the wheel for giggles on the way to Berlin.

This isn’t really that big of a deal when you consider Dick Cheney let George W. Bush live in the White House and pretend like he was President of the United States for 8 years.

I noticed that Gawker didn't mention if the judge was a Mexican judge. Which would be fine, of course, I just hope that she'll be fair.

Traffic tickets? Wtf have at it. A monkey should be able to get the job done. Should there be like “student” judges to take care of that shit anyway? It’s not like deputizing someone that would mistake their handgun for a taser.

As the incident itself demonstrates, however, even real judges make mistakes.

              Mistake? Really?
