I go into Sephora and ask for samples of my favorite super expensive products (perfume, eye cream). When I run out I do the same thing but at another Sephora location in the city.

I asked for a sample of some pricey Bumble & Bumble hair wax about a year ago. The girl there filled two little sample jars to the brim and I’m not even close to using them up. I plan on doing the same thing once I do.

See! Sephora is awesome! I don’t even feel guilty, seeing as I spend an ungodly amount of money there on things I can’t easily get samples of (bronzer, eyeshadow, lipstick, etc.)

It also used to be the Seminary Co-op bookstore in Chicago, but they semi-literally got shut down by The Man.

I like to go to the liquor store and peruse around, thinking about what I’m going to drink over the weekend. Sometimes I’ll do a theoretical build your own 6-pack in my head. And if it’s Friday I’ll actually buy it! But if not I just buy Natty because I drink cheap Sunday-Thursday.

That place and the new Fulton center feel like the future is finally here.

It just sucks that the future took so long and is way over budget.

Oh shit, I did get a really nice faux fur throw from West Elm for Christmas this year. One thing.

Otherwise, no. I’m a year out of grad school and my apartment is furnished almost exclusively in Ikea, Target, and Christmas Tree Shops.

Best retail therapy for me is virtual retail therapy. I can easily wreck myself with Amazon.....

Actual retail therapy involves handing somebody hard currency in exchange for alcohol prior to making impulse buys that I won’t regret until later.

Funny you should mention Amazon. A common thing at a place I used to be at is to go onto someone’s computer (if they left it unlocked) and start browsing for embarrassing shit on amazon. Since many people would log into amazon at work (for some reason), it would then show up in their suggested list when they got home.

Funny you should mention that....a buddy I used to work with and I used to have an ongoing joke with our branch mgr about how we needed him to order us a laminator (we had zero use for a laminator).

One time, I went into my buddy’s office and searched Amazon for laminators. Literally took weeks for it to finally go away from his suggested items on Amazon.

    I feel like...your definition...of retail therapy...isn’t actually...retail therapy...

    But I could be wrong?

I feel the same way....window shopping/browsing isn’t retail therapy at all. I consider retail therapy a simple barter - money for thrills

For me, the LEGO store is the ultimate test of self-control. There’s one dangerously close to my office that I could pass by on my way home if I wanted to...

Honestly, any bookstore, preferably independent. If I really want to burn a ton of time, used is great because you can go through the whole place looking for interesting things.

Second choice was always a good music store - combo of new & used preferable. Still good, but much harder to find.

I also like antique and consignment shops.

Given that my wife hates any store that seems cluttered, smells at all musty, and has an arbitrary collection of items in stock (most of the above fall into that), we don’t always agree on which stores to spend time in. Our compromise shops tend to be kitchen / cookware stores, and occasionally craft galleries (League of NH Craftsmen galleries, for example).

Aren’t you in New York? Is that open shelving I see with sale tags? In my neighborhood and the neighborhood of the office I go into sometimes everything is behind two layers of bulletproof plexiglas. In Manhattan. The Seventies never left, in my liquor-aquiring experience.
