I’m trying to think of something pithier to say than ‘fuck off you pathetic concern-hound’ but nothing’s coming to mind.

So: fuck off you pathetic concern-hound.

Why won’t the President fly over and look out the window of Air Force One with a concerned expression?

    Thanks, Obama!

I know you are functionally illiterate, but the bit about FEMA means they are onsite and their response is functioning as intended because Obama appointed someone actually competent to run FEMA instead of a random dude he knew from horse shows.

This same storm put Detroit freeways underwater yesterday, almost two years to the day of the last time this happened. It’s happening more often. It’s not even that we’re getting more rain; in fact, we’re in a weird drought, some parts of the state bordering on severe. It’s that we’re getting an entire month’s average of rain in a single night.

It’s a well-known GOP fact that global warming is a hoax to get us into the FEMA death camps.

There was just an article about Detroiters still screwed on rehabbing from that. It’s 5 effing AM, I’ll source in the real morning, but goddamn. I had one cousin and one friend with minor damage, but considering my entire family lives in Macomb and Wayne we got off light. My brother did have to wade home and leave his car (thankfully in a safe place).

It was still surreal as fuck to see pictures of the Southfield, as I’d driven down it a couple days prior for a wedding.

On a related note, our stormwater infrastructure in SE Michigan* is shit. ... Literally when they dump it into Lake St Clair.

      * I’m Washtenaw now. Never know if I count as SE. We have stormwater programs/fees, which is good; but a certain corner of my office floods every goddamn heavy rain because we have a shitty landlord + we’re above a “Creek” that isn’t daylighted and its watershed is like 80% impervious.

Thread Hijack: Gawker Media has apparently been sold to Univision, an American-based Spanish-language media company! Seems like a pretty good place to land, to me, based on the brief initial research I’ve done. We will be in good company: the digital division has ownership of The Onion, The A.V. Club, and a site called The Root, which I have only a vague knowledge about.

I didn’t notice any particular changes to The Onion when it was sold to Univision, though I am not a media expert or anything. Other good company at Univision: Robert Rodriguez, the director, and many telenovelas are produced there, so Gawker and Jezebel’s occasional forays into magical realism probably will not ruffle too many feathers, we hope.

Seems OK so far. Ziff-Davis was outbid by 45 million dollars or so, which explains why we don’t belong to Ziff-Davis right now.

We now return to the regularly scheduled comment thread....

(Global Warming Suxx. Glad not too many people have been killed so far.)

Hard to express how brutal this is, not that I can even relay it. Just walked in the door after going through Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and Denham Springs (I live in Tangipahoa parish). My part of the neighborhood lucked out, though it was sketchy. Been doing work with the Red Cross shelter here in town... I know some people have issues with the RC, and I don’t really know who to recommend donating money to other than them, but if you do please throw a few bucks this way. It’s impossible to explain the decimation... Denham Springs is a growing suburb of Baton Rouge (worked there until just a few months ago), this shit is heartbreaking.

Been meeting with a ton of fantastic people, both those helping and those being helped. Props to the nurses, national guard, Red Cross volunteers, Cajun Navy, and obviously all of the first responders.

Animal control facilities have been providing shelter for pets, which is also really awesome to see.

Fucking heartbreaking though. I’m glad we didn’t lose folks like we did in Katrina (all love to out neighbors that did lose their lives during this), but the amount of people that got ruined from this is off the fucking charts. Never seen anything like this.

I hope you are able to stay safe, and give all the help you can without risking your own life. I saw the video of the Cajun Navy rescuing that woman and her dog from that Miata. It was very impressive!

Not to say it doesn’t deserve more coverage, the tragedy certainly does- but the term thousand year flood” gets used so often that it has lost most of its punch.

That’s because we’ve been getting so many of them recently. Every time it’s used is accurate, it’s just the frequency is numbing people to the tragedy.

“I remember thinking how glad I was to not have to go through that,” one homeowner, recalling Hurricane Katrina, told the Louisiana Advocate. “And now this morning, I’m standing in line down at Immaculate Conception to get us something to eat.”

Just shy of 100 years ago, and every bit as relevant today..

    Stay safe, Louisiana.

A suggestion of where to donate to aid Louisiana flood relief efforts (other than the Red Cross): Dr. Jeff Masters, who has long reported on weather but also natural disasters (like the Haiti earthquake and its aftermath), recommends donating to Portlight:

Link from Jeff Masters’ blog at Wunderground: https://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMaste…

      Excerpt:

....Louisiana disaster survivors with disabilities need your support after historic flooding

The Portlight.org disaster relief charity, founded and staffed by members of the wunderground community, is responding to this week’s devastating floods in Louisiana. The disaster is particularly troublesome for a state that is still in recovery from major flooding just last March, and many resources are completely depleted because of the March flooding. That storm left more than 5,000 homes damaged or destroyed and cost $1.5 billion across a three-state area. This past week’s floods have affected at least three times as many homes, and insurance broker Aon Benfield anticipates that the floods may end up being even more costly than the March disaster. There is an urgent need for durable and consumable medical supplies as well as housing. Portlight will be working with the American Red Cross, local stakeholder organizations, and federal partners to respond to this historic flooding event. Your support is needed to make this happen! Please consider making a donation to Portlight’s disaster relief fund at the portlight.org website to further their reach and response in the state of Louisiana. Thank you for any support you can offer!

      The portlight.org website: http://www.portlight.org/

      From the Portlight web site:

Portlight has begun to participate in daily meetings with local stakeholder organizations to coordinate durable and consumable medical supply needs. Portlight is also working very closely with the American Red Cross to ensure all shelters are meeting the needs of people with disabilities. We need your support to make this happen! Please consider making a donation to Portlight to further our reach and response in the state of Louisiana. We thank you for any support you can offer!

It would be good for the site editors to set up a pinned thread with info on the various aid organizations for donating money or supplies for Louisiana flood relief. Portlight should be on the list.

Louisiana really got the double-whammy on this one. The rain hit a wall right around the Texas border (no pun intended) where a high pressure area had been sitting all week facilitating brutally high temperatures across the state.

The pressure center has moved off and now Houston’s been getting rain on and off this week, but it’s not the kind of destructive rains Louisiana got. Tough times out there. I’m sure they’ll rebuild. They always rebuild.
