When someone writes a $500,000 check they don’t do it out of the goodness of their heart.

I know the more cynical among us won’t believe me, but a lot of times they really do.

I think it’s safe to say that the majority of them expect access and influence. It’s not usually a straight, “I’ll pay you to do what I say,” it’s more of the kind of influence that you get if you are the lens through which a leader views political issues. People in general tend to empathize with people they know and can put a face to over people, and that’s what that kind of money gets you at a minimum; the politician will know your name, will remember you, will take your calls and eat dinner with you and listen to what you have to say your voice will be louder than the faceless masses.

This comment is basically perfect. What is so intractable about our campaign finance system is this element. It takes money to run any campaign. That money has to come from somewhere, and if you spend $30,000 to attend a dinner, that gets you face time with the candidate. If you donate thousands of dollars that gets you a call. And that is the beginning of a relationship where you can call up the person when they are in office and have them listen to your problem. It’d be easier to root out if there were more direct quid pro quo aspects, but instead what you are buying is access and a relationship, which is much more difficult to track and condemn

Not going to lie. Clicked the link to find out what a Zephyr Teachout was. Thought Zephyr was a place and a Teachout was something involving teachers. Thoroughly surprised that it was a who.

“When someone writes a $500,000 check they don’t do it out of the goodness of their heart...”

That's true. Every time I cut a check that large, it's pretty much always as a joke, or to try and get something I can't possibly afford. It....never works.

That’s because you try to do it with your own bank account. The trick is to use someone else’s.

    Zephyr Teachout

sounds more like a David Bowie persona than a candidate for public office.

so yes I would vote for them everytime and anytime.

“The voters deserve to hear directly from the billionaires backing John Faso about what they expect to get from him in Congress,” Teachout said in a statement. (She is also fundraising off the challenge.) “When someone writes a $500,000 check they don’t do it out of the goodness of their heart. These are people probably trying to buy power, and voters should know who they are and what they stand for. I’m challenging Paul Singer and Robert Mercer to put your mouth where your money is and debate me directly, not through your mouthpiece.”

I feel that this is a brilliant idea, and also a brilliant challenge issued. Why not expand this idea to other races? It makes sense from a money perspective to have Hillary debate Putin. Now that one, I would like to see!

Except for Hillary’s donors of course. They are good people just trying to make the world a better place.

I wonder how old Zephyr Teachout was when she realized her parents needed a serious beating for naming her Zephyr Teachout? She seems like a nice lady though so she probably just yelled at them.

Sorry, but that is incorrect. She is either a fiercely independent frontierswoman who is equally skilled at both shooting and seduction, or a Bond girl who dies in the first act.
