Why would someone take out a hit on this particular imam, though? I mean, I get it; there are racist, ethnocentric shitbags all over the planet, and certainly here in the US—but to target this specific guy for a “hit” based solely on Islamophobia seems a bit of a stretch.

Perhaps they knew the imam personally?

Whatever the case, I hope they got the right guy in arresting this suspect—and I hope he faces a long, long time behind bars for this. Hit, hate crime, or some mixture of the two, murder’s still murder.

That is definitely true. I’m much more inclined to believe that these killings were motivated by hatred for Muslims as a general thing (the guy’s own brother admitted they “had a hatred” after 9/11), rather than being some kind of professionally orchestrated hit.

Then again, the suspect could be an Islamophobic bigot and still be on the payroll for killing the imam and his assistant—but, y’know, I really think Occam’s Razor dictates that “racist shitweasel killed people because he’s a racist shitweasel” is the most likely explanation.

he now “definitely has no hate for the Muslims.”

    “We’re Catholic-school kids — we don’t do this,” Alvin added. “He’s a good guy.”

So he would never kill a guy because of his religion, because he is a solid dude, but for revenge or money, maybe. He may be a double murderer, but at least he isn’t a bigot.

Stop being PC and calling this a hate crime. It was just a stick up gone wrong turned into execution.

I wasn’t calling it a hate crime, I was actually mocking the whole notion. It seems like this guy’s brother was more afraid people thought his brother was bigot rather than just a garden variety street assassin.

Why second-degree murder? How do you shoot two people from behind, execution-style, at point-blank range, without premeditation and planning? What is the prosecutors’ end game here? Any thoughts, people?

At a guess? They’re going for the one that’s a slam dunk rather than the one that’s harder to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. It’s probably a safe bet the judge will give out maximum sentencing for murder 2, especially if they can get a hate crime charge tacked on there.

It’s always better to underreach rather than overreach. Yes, this is a good case for first degree murder, but if that case fails then there can’t be another due to double jeopardy even if it’s clear the suspect was guilty. It’s much smarter to get the lesser charge of second degree murder in order to maximize the chances of putting the suspect away, if they are guilty. Prosecutors often overreach in their sentencing, and that’s when you’ll get cases of somebody who is blatantly guilty of something like manslaughter walking because the prosecution went for second degree murder instead.

They’re really bending over backwards to make sure they don’t hurt whoever murdered this religious leader’s feelings by saying it was probably a hate crime.

Yeah, I mean that’s obviously part of it, but they don’t seem afraid to discuss the possibility that he was a “hired hit man.” The day it happened they were saying it was a “robbery gone bad” when they had already seen the footage of the man walking up behind them, shooting them, then casually walking away. All I’m saying is that they’re really dancing around the “hate crime” angle.

Yesterday, the police said it appeared to be a robbery gone wrong. I don’t see how an execution style slaying fits with that.

So many people trying to argue as hard as they can that this was not a hate crime. Even if it wasn’t, there’s been a spike in islamophobia and hate crimes against Muslims nationwide. While people were trying to argue against this in NYC, an Oklahoma Muslim was shot and killed by a neighbor who said he hated the “dirty Arab.” My mosque in Long Island was vandalized and graffitti’ed with slurs and talking about the Paris attack.

Heck, in NYC during the brouhaha against Park51 (also started by Republican politicians in an election year who were losing in the polls and played the islamophobia card), a cab driver was stabbed nearly to death by a guy who asked him “are you Muslim?” and stabbed him when he said yes. That was 3 blocks from my apartment and the Muslim community felt panic. A few years ago a woman pushed a brown man in front of an oncoming subway train, killing him, because she thought he was Muslim and she said she was still mad about 9/11.

To those in denial, put yourself in the shoes of an American Muslim. This stuff is scary and put everyone here on edge. There’s a worry there’s going to be more of these, these 3 murders this week could be only the start. The underlying drumbeat of islamophobia and hate speech is not stopping; Trump is still bashing Muslims in general at his rallies and doesn’t discriminate between allies and enemies, and crowds are going wild over it. This is way worse than when Giuliani’s campaign surrogate claimed he would “chase the Muslims back into their caves.” Trump is talking about making American Muslims register with the government and shut down mosques. Even if he loses, his bigoted ideas will remain and stay part of the party platform (as was voted on at the RNC in Cleveland this year.)

There’s a type of magical thinking that some people have: they might acknowledge that racism exists in the abstract, but they have a difficult time believing that people act out based on racist sentiment. They are quick to say that people of color cry wolf about racism; they don’t believe police killing of unarmed people of color could *possibly* be because the cop is racist; until the Justice Department declares a police department is rife with racist cops, they swear out that black people are stopped because they “must have done something wrong”; they don’t believe cops like Mark Furman could have planted evidence; etc. Racist behavior is just a figment of our imaginations to these people.

Maybe it’s a coordinated effort by staff writers past and present to devalue Gawker so a consortium led by Richard Lawson, Caity Weaver, and Brian Moylan (and their sweet mainstream media $$$) can sweep in and buy the company for pennies on the dollar, returning Gawker to its former glory.

Or no one gives a shit about their doing their job to properly moderate Kinja anymore.
