    This is huge...cops shooting hostages?

      It helps show what was covered up (officers firing indiscriminately into tear gas hitting hostages, civilians and inmates alike, intentionally hunting down and point blank shooting inmates who were unarmed, the fact none of the inmates had a gun despite claims by police otherwise etc), validating witness statements that have been ignored and drawing light on just what a total fuck up this whole things was (and possibly preventable). For years after it happened, the official story was the deaths that happened were from the prisoners themselves (they killed the hostages, they killed the other inmates, the inmates shot by police were armed/a threat to officers etc), while the officers involved acted heroically... reality is much different. Her book hopefully sheds more light on that.

    What’s really shocking isn’t that the government acted so harshly 45 years ago, but that we’re still comfortable living in a country where a slightly built non-street smart guy sentenced to five years for drunk driving runs the risk of being raped every day of his sentence as he’s corralled among prison gangs like a gimped puppy and traded for cigarettes.
