If he has a gun, no. What if he takes a hostage, or shoots a bystander? The sad thing is when people commit crimes and have guns, there’s no good answer.

/local news says the gun was stolen in March from the next County over.

Let’s start here; You have no idea what happened. You have no idea what happens if you let the guy go. The police have no idea why he’s running. Get him at home? They know who he is? Why does he have a stolen firearm (assuming that’s true)? Why even try to quarterback this when you have no idea what’s happening? I’m not going to say whether the killing is justified or not but what is most certainly not justified is the lack of civility displayed by those persons damaging both personal and government property without having any idea what actually happened.

If you remember, Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke spoke at the Republican National Convention and got cheers after he announced that the Baltimore cops would not be charged. He’s referred to Black Lives Matter as “black slime” and “garbage,” and he’s called Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Freddie Gray, and Trayvon Martin “goons,” “criminal creep(s),” “criminals” and “co-conspirators in their own demise.” Let’s see what he has to say now.

Honestly, all these riots will do is justify the beliefs in his mind. Right or wrong (hint:it’s wrong), all a lot of people will see is black people committing vandalism.

I agree that a majority of the higher profile police killings of the past few years have been unjustified. But this guy was armed. Honest question, under what circumstances would you feel a cop killing a black man is justified?

Armed does not equate to a death sentence. In fact, in many places, and I’m betting Milwaukee included, being armed is perfectly legal. Thus, the police need to be able to de-escalate the situation. If that is not possible, then yes, armed confrotation is unfortunately needed. More facts are required, but being armed, as it is legal, is not a death sentence.

Very sad, but I’m not suprised. Milwaukee is very much still segregated, and I would say the history of racism and mistreatment runs deeper than most cities. Also, I can honestly say almost every white person in my family that is from Milwaukee is pretty racist.

What makes for a better welcome sign? “America’s most segregated city” or “Beer”.

I grew up in a very small town in Wisconsin, some might call it a hick town, but some of the biggest racists I know come from Milwaukee or the surrounding metro area. Some of them relatives.

I know a family from Muskego who quite seriously find it a wonderful family tradition to play a rousing game of N-I-G instead of P-I-G.

To put some additional context on this in case some people are saying “Milwaukee? Really?” Milwaukee is one of the most segregated major cities in the entire country.

A lot of segregation in Midwestern cities is a pronounced, lasting effect of discriminatory and predatory housing practices that came in response to the Great Migration. When industry waned in these cities, black populations were (unsurprisingly) affected disproportionately, exacerbating racial disparities that reinforced segregation.

Unlike their Chicago, Cincinnati, or Cleveland counterparts, black transplants to Milwaukee arrived mostly at the very end of the migration, and didn’t have a period to settle in before industry (and jobs) dwindled. Of course, it wasn’t exactly a honeymoon for black people in those other cities (CHI/CLE/DET/etc.) in the ‘40s-‘60s, and segregation is still really bad in all those places as well. But it’s definitely most pronounced in MKE.

Also: there are plenty of dumb, racist cops in every state.

What is hilarious about Clarke is conservatives think he’s a big swinging dick in Milwaukee. But his department doesn’t handle crime. They patrol highways and parks in the county, and provide security at the courthouse and airport. That’s why he has so much time to pontificate while others actually work to solve crimes and work on real issues.

    Missing some context here, Gawker.

“Police said the 23-year-old man was armed with a handgun, but Assistant Chief Bill Jessup told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that it wasn’t immediately clear whether the man had pointed a gun or fired at the officer. They described the man as a suspect, but didn’t say what led to the traffic stop.”

“...said he had an arrest record, and that the handgun he carried had been stolen in a March burglary in suburban Waukesha.”

Yeah, this could conceivably be a case where they find a gun after-the-fact, and that’s only if even that part of the story is true.

said he had an arrest record, and that the handgun he carried had been stolen in a March burglary in suburban Waukesha.

So, your typical criminal doesn’t get their guns from this ethereal “black market”? They actually steal their guns from legal owners? It almost sounds like if we reduce the number of legal guns it would reduce the number of guns getting into criminal hands as well.
