It wasn’t on 5th Avenue, so I think we can rule him out as a suspect.

Blaming Donald Trump for this—even if a targeted attack—is as mind-numbingly idiotic as blaming Barack Obama when a Muslim extremist attacks innocent people or a cop gets ambushed and killed or anything else the mouthbreathers on the far right blame him for to push their agenda.

It is fucking pathetic how often one side criticizes the other for partisan stupidity, then mimics the exact same stupidity.

I agree, in general. But in this case, the people blaming Trump appear to be a random gathering of Queens Muslims, rather than, say, Democratic activists.

“Motivated by robbery”? Really? Serious question: I’ve never lived near a mosque or Muslim community. Are Imams known to carry large amounts of cash and/or valuables?

(For example, a lot of flamboyant evangelical “clerics” seem to wear expensive watches and jewelry)

    Not being sarcastic.

Maybe the robber didn’t actually know he was an Imam at all. It’s entirely possible that he was a random target of a low level, desperate mugger in NYC. Not like it’s never happened before. Muggers have been known to target religiously garbed folks before on the premise they're less likely to be armed or put up a fight.

I know that this is going to sound horrible but I really hope that this is tragedy came about because of a simple robbery gone wrong. This would, of course, be little solace for the dead man and his family and the critically wounded man and his family. That said, I hope for society’s sake that it is just an extension of the random violence that plagues America.

Is random violence really “better” than hate crimes? I mean, from a purely quantitative perspective it seems like random violence is worse and also much harder to prevent.

I hope this was just a robbery gone wrong. That this imam died because he lives in a nation that has more firearms than citizens. Because the alternative is that this imam was the victim of terrorism, and it’s become woefully apparent that a large percentage of this country have no idea how to process that possibility.

If this was radical Trumpism, we must make sure people use this term. Because we don’t want to be “politically correct”, now, do we?

Of course. I mean, once you ban the ones outside the country you still have the problem with the ones who are here. They know who is doing all the terrorism. You can’t be certain where their loyalties lie. Just like the Mexicans, especially Mexican judges, they are really all about protecting their own.

You forgot Trump’s supposed donations to NAMBLA, which, according to alot of really good, really smart people, yes, ha-yuuuuuugely smart people, is in fact, run by radical Muslims. Why won’t Obummer say Islamic extremists? I dunno, but this all smells of NAMBLA.

This may well have been a hate crime, but saying “I blame Trump for this” seems a bit reductionistic - like saying “Obama founded ISIS.” Trump’s rhetoric contributes to the climate, but Islamophobia has been a part of our culture for decades. Whether the issue at hand was the PLO, Qaddafi, the Iranian revolution, the first Iraq war, etc., people have generally felt free to make all manner of hateful jokes and comments and assumptions.

“Like saying ‘Obama founded ISIS,’” except that one was an off-the-cuff remark by a man in just the kind of emotionally wrought situation where a bit of hyperbole is perfectly natural, and the other was a calculated, scripted statement that was repeated three times to make sure no one missed the point.

I think they were voicing their inner fears and sudden grief. I am not a Muslim, so I have no idea how worried and paranoid Muslim Americans have become because of Trump, but I assume this type of incident has been in the back of their minds for a while. The men were crowded around their murdered religious leader, so the emotions were high. It could be true, too. Trump is a rabble rouser, a shit starter, and backyard skulker.
