This is like when you think of a snappy comeback, 30 minutes after the conversation ended.

Fucking laugh at the dead, dude. To the extent that your laughter hurts at all, it hurts the living more.

A week later, Cook published a story describing the video and explaining that it was being offered for sale. The Toronto Star followed by writing a story about how its reporters had also seen the video. Until Gawker published Cook’s story, though, the Star had not seen a way to make what its reporters had seen with their own eyes into a printable story of its own.

The main rub is that Canada has considerably stricter libel/slander laws, and there aren’t exemptions carved out for politicians or other public figures like there are in the U.S. That’s why Canadian media outlets are very hesitant to release stories like this (and it’s also why Canada doesn’t have tabloid-style journalism—it’s effectively illegal).

IMO, a U.S. news outlet like Gawker blowing the story wide-open thus made it easier for Canadian media to defend its newsworthiness in the face of potential lawsuits.

That’s really a rule for journalism in general. Some stories, it takes a very long time to break because there’s simply blowback.

Like, you know, revealing that Hulk Hogan is a dickless racist who’s overly protective of his talentless daughter’s twat ends up causing Gawker to have Senior Week.

The Hogan trial is a reminder that there are, indeed, limits in U.S. libel law, but you generally have to really push the envelope to get there.

Being both Canadian and dead, Rob Ford has zero chance of building a wall to keep out immigrants, forcing American Muslims to take loyalty oaths, leading an insurrection of batshit Second Amendment People… so he’s got that going for him.

      Advantage, Rob Ford

This is why it’s frustrating to watch Trump’s campaign. Ford and Trump are two of a kind—two brutish, superficially charming, individually wealthy, populist narcissists who can’t deliver even a minute fraction of what they promise. A comical “Mayor of Toronto” is one thing (it’s not that powerful of a position), but the POTUS? That’s downright terrifying.

even if this video was released, the suburb idiots in Toronto would have crowned him mayor for a second time.
