True. The daughter could have gone to Bob Jones University, who sued the U.S. government for the right to remain segregated. (Bob Jones University v. the United States) And which, very progressively (/s) lifted it’s ban on interracial dating all the way back in.....2000.

I kinda thought so, too, but the whole “lineage back to Adam,” thing bugs me. For the obvious reason (of there not being a fucking Adam and Eve), but also from the loudness of a very glaring omission of the very common fundamentalist mythology of the Curse of Ham (Noah’s son, who in apocrypha became progenitor of Africans) —e.g., America’s Biblical explanation of slavery.

Maw-maw here doesn’t mention it, but she also doesn’t repudiate it, which is kinda sketchy…

As God pranks go, that ranks below planting dinosaur bones but slightly above sending your white daughter a fake prom invite from the popular kid.

A happy medium would have been sending your white daughter a virgin birth of a black child, but I guess that one’s been played out and anyway Mary and Joseph just told their friends he was really tan from his desert escapades.

I used to work in a kids’ bookstore that stocked a book around Christmas that depicted a pretty swarthy Jesus. No lie, an older white woman approached me at the height of holiday shopping to ask if we sold a “white version” of that book. Yes ma’am, it’s shelved right next to “My First Mein Kampf”!

One woman in church looked over at Anna and Glenn and gingerly asked, “Are they . . . dating?”

“Engaged!” I grinned and winked at them.

I had the same reaction to “Glenn moved from being a black man to beloved son when I saw his true identity.” As though the two are mutually exclusive?

    Two thoughts occur:

1.) Eh. Seemed fairly positive all around to me. Good for the happy couple. Good for the mom. She’s obviously grappling with something outside her comfort zone, and is using religion as a means by which to understand it - rather than a means by which to attack it.

2.) 53 seems way too young to be shocked (and to assume all other people are shocked) by this.

Not when you live under a rock. Seriously, though, these people sound like they are of the “deeply religious” variety, and since those Churches can be both simultaneously pretty homogenous (although that is kind of changing) and the center of these people’s lives- it’s not unlikely that she doesn’t see a whole lot of interracial couples.

Before the wedding I reached out to Glenn’s mom, Felicia. As we sat and talked about our children, we realized we have similar hopes and dreams for them. As we share a common bond, I’m hopeful Felicia can become a friend.

Note: that common bond is not Felicia’s hair.

‘Calling Uncle Fred a bigot because he doesn’t want your daughter in an interracial marriage dehumanizes him.’

No, it’s calling him what he is. Dehumanize, my ass. Pray for him, yes, if you want to. Tell him you won’t put up with any BS first, tho.

Right? I hate when people say that you shouldn’t call out bigoted comments. ok, you don’t want to dehumanize Uncle Fred, but how do you think Glenn and your daughter feel when he says stuff like that and you just sit there and smile politely at him?

It kind of reminds me of when that Congressman Steve King was on a panel and he made a remark about how whites contributed more to civilization than other races. The host’s response was to stop anyone from responding from him and quickly moved on to another topic, essentially letting King’s racist comment stand unopposed. There's really no way to remain neutral here; if you let people say stuff like that without challenging it, AND you discourage anyone else from challenging it, then you're an enabler at best.

Maybe but the subtext of that article is, “why me?” Love the article btw...while I read it, I imagined her typing it in tears, drinking vodka and popping some benzos while occasionally screaming “why have you forsaken me, Lord?” The whole thing, while trying to be supportive, seemed...I don’t know, I guess the word is “tense”.

I especially love where she says: “...permitting an interracial marriage.” I’m sorry, but did she issue Glenn a special permit so he could marry her perfect, godly, white daughter? “permitting,” for fuck’s sake.

Ugh. I think the racial attitudes are actually surprisingly honest and progressive for someone who believes that her adult daughter needs her approval to get married, and that her daughter’s husband should love an imaginary deity more than he loves her.

I used to think I was agnostic but I’m leaning more and more toward atheism these days.

They answer different questions. You can be both. I am.

I cannot prove (and maintain that one cannot prove) that there isn’t a supreme being, but there is no compelling evidence that one exists. That makes me an agnostic atheist.

Fair enough. I was thinking more along the lines of being less and less comfortable having anything to do with religion, though.
