Consider the men these conservative dissenters can look to as men of leadership and vision: George W. Bush, chief executive of the most disastrous presidency of the past century. George H.W. Bush, who promised conservatives “no new taxes,” then agreed to tax increases. Ronald Reagan, who sang America’s praises while running guns to the Ayatollah and running deficits at home. Richard Nixon, whose sins need not be recounted. Dwight Eisenhower, who openly embraced liberal federal programs and knocked over unfriendly governments around the world.

How can anyone respect a Republican Party that has never stood for anything more principled than the almighty dollar? How can anyone respect a Republican establishment that disclaims Donald Trump but asks that Americans vote for the party that nominated him? How can anyone respect a Republican leadership that sells its supporters on liberty, small government and white welfare, only to provide a bloated security state, a terrifically expensive military and billions of dollars of corporate welfare?

The Republican Party faces today a monster of its own making. Everyone in the party that stands against Trump is better for having done so, but it does nothing to erase 60 years of racist demagoguery and 150 years of corporate fealty. Not when we all know full well they’ll be saying the same things as ever come Hillary’s Inauguration Day. When Marco Rubio says Zika-positive women shouldn’t have abortion access? When everyone from Rand Paul to Lindsay Graham supports the flat tax? When Scott Walker teases military action against Iran on the first day of his presidency? That’s the Republican Party we know and hate, and disavowing Donald Trump barely puts a dent in that pile of poisonous shit.

The GOP as we know it is irretrievably broken. Even if Trump loses, the genie he let loose isn’t going back into the bottle. The GOP managed to co-opt the Tea Party in 2009, but they won’t manage it a second time. The eastern conservative establishment doesn’t know how to do anything except continue to parrot the same small-government, pro-corporate nonsense that Trump supporters have finally called out as the BS it is. They aren’t going to trust anyone, even Ted Cruz, who keeps telling them the same things. But the GOP establishment can’t break from that canon because it can’t survive without the big-money donors who’ve been calling the shots up to now. They’ll try anyway, but it’s going to bite them in the ass in 2020.

This is like the political equivalent of a man’s rejection at bar: “...and she’s probably a lesbian, anyway.”

He’d have been crowing about any one of these endorsements from these 50 if they’d have endorsed him.

I don’t see what this should stop him. Remember when he released his Supreme Court shortlist and one of the judges was Don Willett, a Texas Supreme Court judge who hates Trump and has been insulting him on Twitter relentlessly?

I doubt he knows the names of all 50 of these people and a few may end up being misrepresented as Trump supporters in a future tweet.

criticized Trump for being alarmingly ignorant of “basic facts” and either “unable or unwilling to separate truth from falsehood.”

Hasn’t this been the official GOP platform for decades?

It’s so unfair. Republican voters were never supposed to nominate someone who actually believed their party’s bullshit.

A question has come to mind: did he steal the “!” from Jeb!, or did Jeb! steal it from him? If the former, then he must’ve actually “earned” it from Jeb!’s defeat in the race.

The GOP has used violently irrational ignorance to help whip up their base for generations — rumors about welfare queens, anchor babies, race mixers, and secret connections to Communism, Islam, and other filthy foreign ideologies, etc. Hell, as recently as 2014 they rode the Tea Party machine to victory, making xenophobia and anger a political vehicle for conservatism.

What’s happened now is that they have a candidate and a base that actually believes the horse shit that GOP strategists have been using to get their guys elected. Trump’s voters have been internalizing this crap for decades and now it's too late to tell them that they weren't supposed to believe it.

Absolutely. Donald Trump isn’t very proficient in anything besides promoting Donald Trump. Attaching his brand to their carefully constructed (vaguely fascist) rhetorical ideology was a fairly simple branding exercise for him, because it came ready-made to escalate. The GOP basically conjured the bloated goblin that is Trump.

A Trump presidency will be like the movie Independence Day, where all people and nations band together to recognize that we are all human and that what we have in common outweighs our differences. Also Trump will be the aliens.
