John Oliver is like a Soviet knockoff of Jon Stewart.

He touches on this a bit with the Adelson bit, but there’s a reason that Murdoch and Koch are buying up a number of newspapers, and it ain’t because they’re highly profitable. As you saw, major media outlets often get their stories or parts of their stories from newspapers. Now, what if those papers tended to cover conservative issues a bit more? Two things: 1) There’s a greater chance that mainstream media would pick them up because it’s partially packaged; and 2) A story that might not be fully true, suddenly has an air of legitimacy because an “independent” small newspaper covered it, not CNN, Fox, etc. You can create the narrative from the bottom up, rather than top down, just like conservatives have successfully done in local and state elections.

You sound like an unhinged conspiracy theorist. The reason they’re buying up all those papers is so they can put a nude girl’s knockers on page 6. Simple, really.

Thank God we have John Oliver. Once Stewart went off the air, I was worried there would be no one to excitedly explain my own opinions about that one article I just read back to me through the TV screen.

Not to mention those highly provocative 10-minute supercuts that clearly demonstrate that over the course of hours of broadcast news, the same words and phrases are used with a certain degree of frequency! That’s some real Mark Twain level shit right there!!

It’s true...and also, the broadcast media is actually dumb! Just don’t tell anyone that Rush Limbaugh’s been doing the exact same thing since the 80's ;/

Augmented reporting? I thought Gawker was just a comment site where the paid people got to comment first.

Why does anyone need to know what’s going on in local news anyway? I’d rather find out that the subway in NY is closed for the month, or that the Mayor of Los Angeles ate a kosher burrito, than have to think about the lead in my water.
