You know who else believed that? Adolf Hitler! The Nazis compiled archives of photographs, analyzing them “for racial as well as characterological content (as did Hooton). Thus, from nose shape, forehead height and distance between lower lip and chin, a subject might be identified as 30 percent Alpine, 30 percent Mediterranean and 40 percent Danubian,” Hersey wrote. “The Nazis often used American high-school yearbook photographs for this purpose.”

I seem to have missed something here. The Nazis studied American high-school yearbook photos for what purpose? Just to categorise the people as being a certain racial makeup? Unless they knew something about who the people were, this seems like a very pointless and odd thing to do...

  I think I’m just missing the point, but wouldn’t you use photos of people whose backgrounds (criminal, career, etc) you knew or could check for this? How would they know any of that from a random high school yearbook? Unless this was a much more involved thing where they had files on these students, I’m not really seeing how these pictures could tell them anything about these people in terms of how successful/criminal they actually are. It seems like it would cause a lot of arguments that couldn’t be resolved too- I think she looks like a criminal! I think she looks like a future housewife! Well, which is it? Answer: we have no idea who that is...
