I had a similar experience at work recently. A new colleague strode confidently up to me, and extended their right arm. I flinched slightly, unsure of what would happen next, but their right hand grasped mine and interlaced their fingers and thumb with my own. It felt oddly.. cordial. I asked where they learned this exotic gesture. They replied, “Real America.”

They touched your fingers... with their fingers? That’s fucking nasty.

I do that too. I think they might be onto something with it being a “gesture of sincerity,” as I do tend to do it when I am trying to convey sympathy or understanding. That said, I don’t know why this is newsworthy.

Or maybe I am having small-scale heart attacks and just don’t realize it.

Trump is uniquely qualified in this area. He has the ability to put his entire hand on specific ventricles and atriums.

He could probably get those tiny fingers to fit right between his chest skin molecules, ant-man style.

Hands and arms are often awkward during public speaking, moreso when walking on a stage. This is probably an easy way for Clinton to hold her arm so she doesn’t look too stiff.

That’s one of my pet peeves when attending any conference or meeting, people who either can’t speak with gesturing uselessly. They are usually mimics because they have either been taught to gesture by someone who thinks it’s a necessity during a speech or the monkey see monkey do variant of speaker.

Anyone who can keep an audience engaged as a power speaker without having to resort to gestures to hold attention is a great presenter, there are very few of these at all that I have seen in my life. I haven’t seen one politician in this election with the charisma to pull it off.

They should all keep their hands firmly at their sides - stop this pointing at some random person in the audience like you just recognized them.

I too make an unusual hand gesture whenever I read an Alessandra Stanley article:

“Stanley has been called out many times for taking liberties in articles, the kind that precipitate retractions. An article she wrote on Peter Jennings, for instance, was amended with 19 corrections”

WTF? Since we’re wiping our asses with standards where do I send my resume to get hired on there? I’m not a journalist but I can use Google, Wikipedia and spell check. How do you find nineteen ways to fuck up a recipe for vanilla milk? Did Peggy Noonan have Thomas Friedman’s love child?

It’s a “joke” lazily recycled from an earlier article.

Thanks. You been around here since 2009?

She’s been working there 30 years. There aren’t even Google links to most of her work lol. Wasn’t easy to find the actual Jennings article.

She butchered Cronkite’s life. In case anyone cares.

Hand on heart for the Pledge of Allegiance back in grade school in 1975. Hand (or cap) on heart during the playing of the national anthem before any sporting event since.

It only her 40 years, but she finally became aware of the national trend. Good for you, Stanley! All the pats on the head!

I still do the off arm behind the back, with the forearm held straight across because of a grade school teacher who was a bit intense about the pledge...

There is a debate in media circles. Does AS simply make shit up, or is she fucking stupid?

        I say why not both?
