So I guess Carter’s whole “no assassinations” thing isn’t a thing anymore.

Carter’s “no assassinations” thing was about members of actual governments. Like, “no killing the president of a country just because you think he may be a commie.” But not “you’re not allowed to kill leaders of terrorist orgs in anything other than a full-scale battle”

Please. Don’t pay attention to any of the foreign policy deals that Carter architected. To those on the left and right he’s a pussy who ruined America. Now shut up and vote for one of the two warhawks running for president.

Except that’s not what the article says at all. Presidential approval isn’t required and the people who do have the authority to order executions without trials aren’t even accountable to Congress.

It says there are extremely rare situations where Presidential approval isn’t required. My guess is those circumstances would be “oh shit, Al-Baghdadi stepped out into the open to take a pee, we’ll lose him if we don’t do it right now.”

Huzzah! We can all relish in the fact that, for the next eight years, Hillary will continue — and surely increase — Obama’s legacy of extra-judicial killing. When she’s not calling them “super predators” stateside, she’s never known a brown person, 8,000 miles away, who she didn’t want to turn to dust. Why stop now?

The drone killings are a grim legacy indeed. Your comment about Hillary and brown people is a rather fatuous leap however.

Who’s surprised? What is surprising is the number of people who can’t understand why terrorists attack us.

For every person killed by terrorists in the US and Europe and we’ve killed at least 10 people in Pakistan, Yemen, Afghanistan, etc. Our trade surplus in death is huge.

Imagine if every drone strike was covered like the Boston Marathon bombing. Once a day our news was inundated with images of missing limbs and charred corpses. Would we be surprised then? Because that’s the reality, but we don’t have to see it. We only see it on the rare occasions when it happens to us, but never when we’re the ones doing it.

Being president is a bitch. Sometimes you make decisions that will get people killed.

I remember Cheney (uggh) talking about how he pulled Bush aside during the 9/11 attacks and told him he had to get his head around the idea that he might have to order a US fighter jet to shoot down a civilian airliner.

I mean, yes, I long for the perfect world where there are no terrorists, or regions of the world the USA, in all its past glory, hasn’t royally fucked up so we’re still myred there. But this is not the perfect world of the privileged American hypster, but the real world. And shit gets real.

You have to elect a president able to make lethal decisions (up to and including the use of nuclear weapons) but who strives to make the right decisions at all times, without emotions getting in the way.

Your example of how we have to make tough decisions and why we shouldn’t judge these deaths is DICK CHENEY!?You’ve already boxed yourself in, bud.

The documents also disclose an alarming number of requests from Debbie Wasserman Schultz for drone strikes in the vicinity of Burlington, Vermont.

Welp. If we’re going to fight endless wars forever, may as well do them with flying death robots. We should just stop being shocked when we get attacked here.

So we can blame Obama for recent attacks? Or is that why those Saudis decided to crash planes into buildings, because of our drones?

Hmm. Yeah I hear that generally speaking the best way to respond to a terrorist attack is to engage in endless bombing wars against countries where people are the same color as the terrorists. Good point.

They are never going to like us, not even if we as an entire people surrendered, went over there, and collectively performed fellatio (no cunnilingus, though, because haram) on the lot of them, so go ahead and bomb the fuck out of them. Seriously, the naiveté of appeasers is fucking amazing. On the plus side, though, at least the cock you’re willing to suck (NTTAWWT) is circumcised.

On the flipside, they would probably like us a lot better if we didn’t

      - bomb weddings

      - shoot mothers and then dig the bullets out

      - torture them

      - make them get naked and have dogs bite their dicks

      - strafe hospitals

      - run night raids, every night

      - surveil them heartily

      - throw puppies off cliffs

      - drive around their towns in MRAPs

      - prop up dictatorships

      - rape their teenage daughters

and so on, and so on, and so on. My handy tip for understanding other people’s POV: imagine how you would feel if an invading force did the same things to your town.
