That is, admittedly, an extremely oddly worded question- although the safest answer probably would have been “with the mothers who have lost their sons to gun violence.” I can see why it threw her off, though. I don’t exactly have a ranked list of “meaningful conversations” with anyone.

That speaks volumes of what shitty relationships you have with your family and friends.

And that’s why I hate those questions. They are meant to sound innocuous but are actually set-up to be “gotcha” moments later on (insert tv show/internet site). I don’t enjoy this landscape - she’s attending a gathering of accomplished minorities, let’s ask her the dumbest minority related question possible. As a black man, I would hate (not even a strong enough verb here) to be asked anywhere, “Hey, what’s the most meaningful conversation you’ve ever had with a (insert race)?” All I would do is stare blankly at that person’s face. Who categorizes the most memorable conversations by meaningfulness and race?

Ok, I’m well aware that this may have been a sort of ‘gotcha’ type question but still:

So I really have had a lifetime of friendship, going back to my college years when one of my best friends was an African American student.

If you’re going to claim that one of your best friends was black, maybe drop a name so it appears you still remember them. Like even for the sake of privacy of your friend, just mention a first name.

She really isn’t all that great at dealing with the press directly, is she?

Still unsure that dealing with/placating gotcha-oriented shitheads is an important job skill when it comes to governing.

Because Gawkers next headline will be “HERE IS A FULL WEB PROFILE OF HRC’S FAVORITE BLACK PERSON!!!!” by Jordan Sargent (who accidentally outs her as a lesbian)

Nothing says political transparency and accountability like refusing to take questions from a press that is, for the most part, already in the tank for you.

Additionally, the common theme around here is anyone who immediately lists all the black friends he/she has is a closet racist. I’m guessing the Hillary standard makes this an exception?

No, false equivalence. Going out of your way to list all your black (gay, Jewish, etc.) friends as evidence that you’re not a bigot is a pretty standard bigot move. Hillary got asked this stupid question out of nowhere.

Correction - the common theme is that is inappropriate to deflect criticism for racist behavior by listing off your black friends. (To make it easier to understand, imagine if Roger Ailes deflected sexual harassment allegations by pointing out that he is married to a woman — wouldn't be too convincing and wouldn't even be a good defense).

She gave a safe, sensible answer to a plainly loaded and absurd question. As if every conversation with a black person is an occasion, a kind of interlocutory tourism.

The correct answer, on the other hand, is probably the conversation where she accepted Barack’s repeated entreaties to be Secretary of State.

Kevin Merida was obviously baiting her. Assuming you keep a running tally of all your “meaningful conversations” at your fingertips, why would you divide them into racial categories?

It’s like one of those dumb job interview questions. “What’s your most satisfying work experience?"

“Well, gee, uh, once I told one of my employees to get off his ass and do something productive, and he actually did it! It was deeply gratifying.”

I couldn't recall, off the top of my head, the most meaningful conversation I've had with anybody. That seems like a short essay question, where you need to sit and think on it for a minute before diving into your five paragraph answer.

First we have to define ‘meaningful’, and by then the whole thing is in the weeds anyway.

I watched this live. She was kind of put on the spot. Her answer was okay with me (I’m speaking for all black people of course). She really shined when a similar question was asked next about Latino issues.

Trump’s answer would have been two words: Ben Carson

That would have been my first go-to were I she. It would have been, “Probably when I discussed taking out Osama bin Laden with the President.”

      Done.

But maybe she obsessed too much on the “friend” versus “colleague/boss” distinction. She shouldn’t have. Obama would have totally backed her play that they are friends.

At least he didn’t ask her why people don’t like her. I wish I could find it, but I saw a supercut on Twitter this morning of reporters asking her that since 1979.

Also, someone else asked her that at this press conference today, of course.
