Sometimes the ACLU holds good position and says decent things. But sometimes “the ACLU does not oppose to the use of robots to kill suspects in general”.

I know that yes, yet again, I’ll be told how much of an idiot I must be, but I’ll never understand anyone who can come up with situations where it’s okay to kill people. Don’t kill people.

So did the Turkish cop in this story do the wrong thing?

The hero police officer who gunned down one of the airport suicide bombers, saving dozens of people, is recovering in hospital after having his spleen removed.

The officer - named as Yasin Durna by local media - was seen risking his own life by confronting the terrorist as he chased innocent passengers through the terminal on Tuesday evening.

But Durna shot the suicide bomber, who fell to the floor, allowing people at Ataturk Airport to get away.

Yes, he killed someone. Don’t kill people, especially if you are a state actor. Not surprised the Daily Mail would write so glowingly about a killer, though.

Definitely needs to be some codified rules, but frankly I don’t have any problem with the way the robot was used in Dallas. Neutralized a violent suspect in the midst of committing a violent, deadly act, and put no further officers or civilians in danger to do it. That’s a win, as far as I’m concerned.

This. Definitely needs to be carefully documented and regulated, but as a one-off action in an active (and deadly) situation that the shooter himself vowed to continue, I cannot fault the officers involved for their actions in the least.

They could come up with rules now. I’m not sure why people thought they would have rules before this if it’s the first time that it ever happened.

One thing that stories about this topic have obscured — are these robots that are designed for bomb delivery or do they have other, non violent uses and some cop just came up with the idea of putting a bomb on it? I had initially assumed that it was a normal remote control robot that cops routinely use to defuse bombs, deliver food and messages to suspects in hostage situations and standoff, etc. is it like that or is it more like a Predator drone?

You’ll care when they send a robot to blow up you or your loved ones.

Or maybe when they mail you their ashes instead of bothering to tell you that they committed “suicide” in prison, like it happened with this Ottawa man

I'd find it even more baffling if they DID have a pre written procedure for something that no one even contemplated before.

I, too, am shocked, SHOCKED I say, that the DPD did not have a written procedure in place for something that had never happened anywhere in the world!

I maintain this was a brilliant solution to an intractable problem. That being said, killer robots are the future, teach them well and let them lead the way. They will show us all the intestines we keep inside.

When he dropped his weapon to hold his hands to mouth and squeal “Awwwwww so CUTE!” they were going to shoot him.

I’ve said this in a reply to a couple of other people, but honestly, I cannot find fault with the officers involved in this incident in the least.

Sure, the precedent for using remote-detonated and robot-delivered munitions to kill a suspect is troubling—but that assumes this practice is continued and utilized in situations that do not demand swift, lateral thinking, as the Dallas Shooter incident did.

The use of these delivery vehicles—and the employment of explosives for lethal force—needs to be very carefully documented and regulated going forward, but the cops on the ground in this situation were dealing with an active shooter who’d already killed several of their colleagues, and was threatening to kill more besides.

Given the situation as it unfolded, I do not blame the officers on the ground in the least for trying to protect as much life as possible (by not putting their own further in the line of fire). It sucks that it required ending a life to do that—but the shooter, as far as I’m concerned, made his choice when he started gunning down officers from sniping positions.

Kudos to the cops for thinking on their feet. Rather than subject another one cop to being killed; they carried out a rather clever plan to neutralize the target. I’m not losing sleep over Johnson’s death. Good riddance to rubbish.

ETA: I understand the precedent this could lead to...still not losing sleep or giving fuck for this assassinating POS.

I have a very good friend who ran the LAPD bomb squad for a long time....he says this wasn’t winging it at all, they just prefer to not deploy using this method.
