The Russian people won’t be Putin up with this for much longer, I have the feeling.

I wonder what his reaction would be if all the teachers quit suddenly? I’m sure he’d be apoplectic with rage that they are shirking their duties to the childrens.

It’s Russia. This is probably exactly what they want to happen.

Take Putin for example, he worked in government all his life but has a reported net worth of $50 billion dollars. It’s not like he’s getting a billion dollar a year salary, he’s just figured something else out.

That’s what happens when you’re asked to safeguard KGB cash while the Soviet Union is collapsing.

Russian teachers can make money just like Russian cops make money. Require each kid in a class to pay 100 rubles per month to make sure that their academic paperwork doesn’t get lost... because it would be a real shame if something happened to all those important records, wouldn’t it?

That’s a nice term paper you have there. Be a shame if something happened to it.

I phrased it more blunt than it would really be. In Russia, when the cop stops you, he’s saying that your headlight infraction requires you to come down to the station for an inspection and to sign some papers, which will take a few hours to sort out, or you can just pay a small fee here on the roadside for express service and be on your way in ten minutes.

The low pay for high-skilled positions thing is kind of a tradition in Eastern Bloc countries already. Some of my Russian émigré friends were engineers and lawyers back home; they've opened up tailor shops here in the states and make far more money. I also remember renting a room through a woman in a train station in Prague several years ago (sounds suspicious, but it's a mostly legitimate enterprise over there). She was actually a dead ringer for Ivana Trump - swept-up blonde hair, meticulously made-up, lovely suit and heels. Turns out she was an anesthesiologist at one of the local hospitals and rented out tourist lodgings as a second job.

I was at the beach with friends this past weekend and the guy who owned the house kept talking about this Russian masseur who used to be a lawyer over there. I guess giving messages in the US pays better.

“I am absolutely sure that a modern, energetic teacher, is capable of not only earning his position’s salary but also... earning something else somehow,” Medvedev responded.

Expect these teachers to start accepting “gifts” from their “best” students shortly.

Unfortunately, one half of our own government feels the same way...they just don’t come out and say it as bluntly.

They’ve falsely convinced themselves that every retail and fast food employee in America could just up and quit, go to night school and become a paralegal overnight.

Nevermind the fact that we don’t need that many paralegals nor can we do without a retail or fast food sector.

Raising the minimum wage to a reasonable facsimile of what it would be had it rose with inflation would be a good start to repairing the middle class.

Actually Finland, the country politicians are always saying the US needs to emulate with it’s education system, has teachers that are well paid and have a strong union.

Strangely GOP politicians seem to forget those two things when talking about making our system more like theirs.
