        Elizabeth Ailes is one of those reactionary, ultra-Catholic Catholics, more Catholic than the Pope—at least, than the current one—a diner-out with the likes of Cardinal Dolan and sui generis far closer to Madame Nhu than to Dorothy Day on the vast and inspiring continuum of Catholic women. She seems to share her husband’s gifts for malice, petulance, magical thinking, and raw paranoia, as well as his appetite for revenge.

        She’s also the sort of person no-one at all would listen to—not even her child, not even her priest— if her net worth consisted of her Social Security check and a small pension, plus a mostly-paid-for $250,000 bungalow somewhere upstate.
