I wouldn’t be surprised if this correct, as I’ve read stories for years about foreign models routinely coming to the US for shoots on visas that don’t allow work, but, given that this predates her marriage to Trump and she’s a US citizen now (so ICE can’t suddenly deport her), I can’t really get worked up about it.

You can’t get worked up about a guy campaigning on demonizing illegal immigrants being married to an illegal immigrant?

      I agree 98%

1% Recognizes that given Donald’s history of Birtherism and related bloviating, some hay could be made of the double-standard.

1% If even a little bit of hay can be made, I would like to see what stupid, offensive thing he says to defend himself that would be totally unnecessary and score another big own goal.

But yeah, 98% right there with you.

Her skin isn’t nearly dark enough for anyone in the GOP to care if she was violating immigration laws. They preach about drugs, but melanin is the only thing they really don’t want you smuggling in.

Pretty hilarious that all of Hillary’s attacks right now are geared towards enraging Trump’s base rather than energizing hers. She’s better at appealing to Republicans than Dems.

I thought HB-1 visas were for skilled workers, usually require a college degree and are fairly hard to come by — only companies that have the resources to handle the paperwork and expense use them. At least in my industry, they are highly sought after by highly skilled and educated workers, and not everyone gets one just for the asking. Do fly-by-night modeling agencies and freelance models fulfill those requirements? As Trump might say, that’s fine, I don’t know, you tell me.

Listen, it is hard to take off your clothes and stand still while someone takes pictures of you. Highly skilled labor, there. Not the sort of thing you could get an American to do. /s

And also Russia, if you’re able to find the escort agency owner who likely paid her to dance at nightclubs with rich toads and bring him out of retirement in Tahiti, the press would appreciate that too.

Eh, can’t bring myself to care too much about this. If she didn’t follow the rules perfectly, I’d put money down that she followed what she was told the rules were. I have a friend who used to work in the modeling world (I have such beautiful modeling friends, just the best, just spectacular) (ok, but seriously, my friend worked in the administrative side of things, was not actually a model) and I remember her telling me years ago that the majority of foreign models they worked with (aside from the like high-profile ones) had documentation that was sketchy-ish. But if they had a pretty face and long legs and could take the photographer’s direction, nobody gave much of a shit. Not cool that she did it, but par for the course for the industry, apparently.

I’m far more bothered by Trump’s stance on H-1B and use of foreign labor... it’s hypocritical on Trump’s part, obviously, but that’s par for the course. But the fact that so many Republicans are willing to go along with it also speaks to a larger hypocrisy in contemporary pop conservatism. The movement decries government involvement in anything, wants to minimize federal control of business activity, and protests any rules or regulations that hamper business freedom... and yet they’re perfectly happy to say, “well of course Mr. Trump exploits this visa program and makes his clothing overseas at pennies on the dollar, the government hasn’t set up laws and regulations that prevent him from doing so!”

I”m very confused by the H-1B claim. It’s REALLY expensive and time consuming to get H-1B visas. There is a ton of paperwork and proof that must be submitted and the employee must schedule time with the US government to get interviewed. It’s not easy or quick. It seems a strange way for Donald to get ‘cheap’ labor - like it seems like he’s going through a lot of unneeded time and expense to save some dollars on the employee wage.

I think he uses a lot more H-2B than anything else (that’s reportedly how he gets the vast majority of the staff for Mar-a-Lago). I have precious little experience with either, and I don’t know the effort involved, I just know that he’s claimed publicly that he uses both, and he shouldn’t be able to, because the government should have stopped him.

But then, it’s Trump. Who knows if he actually knows the difference between the two, or between workers with H-1B/H-2B visas and undocumented workers... and who knows if he cares.

Can we not do this? Let’s not do this...

If she did something illegal, I'm sure there's nothing anyone (certainly not me, in the comments section of Gawker) can do to stop the momentum of making this a thing, but this is not a good use of anyone's time. Trump is doing absolutely everything in his power to throw this election. Let's not make his wife a martyr. It's a losing strategy...

I agree. Calling out the hypocrisy of public figures is pointless. Who cares if they have different rules for themselves, than they want to apply to us. No harm in that.
Besides...why be so negative? We’ve got Pokemon GO to distr...er. entertain us. What a wonderful world!

I have a few thoughts... 1) Trump is a fucking scourge and needs to be stopped. If someone thinks highlighting this “hypocrisy” achieves that goal, I don’t have authority to stop them, but 2) while we’re on the topic of hypocrisies, don’t you find it a little unsettling for liberals to decry the treatment of (illegal) immigrants by the right and then jump for joy the moment we can villify one on our own terms? 3) Melania may be a public figure, but she’s not the one we need to take down. Trump is the target and he’s giving us plenty of ammunition. I just think this is wasted energy with a high chance of blowing up in our faces. Sure it’s hypocritical of her and her husband to demonize immigrants and abuse the system, but it’s only like the 800th most offensive thing he’s done today and it makes us look petty and hypocritical too.
