And that risk is not evenly distributed. The state of Florida is by far the most at-risk, with a full 1/8th of the state’s homes potentially ending up as scuba sites.

    An eighth of Florida disappearing?

    What’s the down-side?

According to experts it means 17 million people all of a sudden becoming homeless? Where would they go? This would be a refugee crisis about 20X bigger than the Syrian/Libyan/Afghan/Pakistan/India/Iraq/Lebanon/Jordan/Palestine/Iran/Turkey/Morocco/Sudan/Egypt/etc Refugee Crisis.

I can see some climate denier walking out onto the beach in front of his home, looking at the other 7 nearby homes and thinking... my probability is pretty good!

For that kind of insight into the real estate market one would have to have a degree from a certain most luxurious, really beautiful “university.”

Given that I live within minutes of Florida beaches in three directions, I guess I probably shouldn’t take my landlord up his offer to let us buy this house.

    Such is life.

If you can talk him down on the price, it would be a good short-term investment for a burial at sea.

Maybe. He’s only asking 95 on a purchase price of 125 in 2006, which I find kinda telling. But then again I don’t know a goddamn thing about real estate.

It’s not worth it to me me either way, though. This place isn’t so bad, but the neighborhood leaves a bit to be desired.

Oh, they already do. Florida insurance rates are pretty fucking high. It’s partly why the state is so reluctant to raise taxes and why it’s so dependent on getting itself under the federal and international money spigot. Raising state taxes would show the real costs.

To me, the real solution lies with the feds. Unfortunately, FEMA ends up becoming a feeding trough for construction companies to rip off taxpayers rebuilding shit that should not be rebuilt. FEMA’s response to predictable phenomena (like hurricanes on the Gulf Coast or earthquakes in California) has to stop being the creation of bubbles of economic activity, but active adjustment of population centers toward safer areas or making areas more resilient.

Yeah, it gets a bit tiring hearing about “emergency relief” or other taxpayer-funded services provided to rich beachfront property owners that choose to own property in hurricane zones. Reporter standing in the aftermath: “Oh lord, the devastation! We haven’t seen anything like this in 6 years!”

As a part time Florida resident who understands that beyond the punch lines this state offers a true sub-tropical, even primeval, beauty that you won’t experience anywhere in the United States, I fully anticipate this loss like a gut punch.

If you can, make your way to Florida Keys before the only option is to dive on them.

Every so often, I remember that the crest of the hill a few blocks north of me is the old shoreline of the prehistoric lakebed I live on and then I’m less worried about the water level rising and sinking everything south of there. It’s not that it won’t happen, it’s just that the planet itself will be fine, even if people will have to scramble.

Why not just build a boat around the entire condo. when the flood comes, you just disconnect your utility lines and sail away.
