I was listening to someone tell an anecdote on the radio yesterday about how Tim Kaine launched into a 40 minute talk about the history of Presidential war powers with no notes and no preparation in response to questions. It’s weird how “can speak for an hour off the top of his head” is sometimes really impressive, and sometimes it’s just an elderly dementia case ranting about how fire marshals are conspiring against him and Gold Star families are the real enemy.

The “Tim Kaine is boring” argument is absolutely ridiculous, as though boring is bad in government. No, let’s have unpredictable leaders instead!

That was the knock on Al Gore. He was a wonk. The petulant little boy he was running against was fine, though.

I’d really like us to get through one week of this campaign where we just talk about issues facing this country. Rural unemployement, income inequality, financial sector regulation, defense & security spending, criminal justice reform, education, trade deals, etc.... Of course, that is probably impossible when one side of this race can’t speak for five minutes without vomiting outright lies or insults.

Character and temperament are issues. They shouldn’t be, but here we are. They are actually the most important issues. If Trump were a Democrat and had liberal ideas (heck, some of his ideas are liberal) I couldn’t vote for him. I don’t understand anyone voting for him.

In the Best American President polls, most people give George Washington and Abraham Lincoln the top spots. I don’t know if it’s fair or right to compare Trump to either of these men. I don’t know if it’s fair or right to even compare Hillary Clinton to them. But because this is their aspiration, I’m going to anyway.

George Washington always edges out Lincoln for the top spot on my list for one specific reason. He left when he was supposed to. He didn’t fancy himself a President-for-Life or a king, even though there were others trying to tempt him to stay and assume that power. He didn’t think or say that he alone could do this – that he was our only hope. In the whole history of the world to that point, no one in such a position of power, in such a fine catbird seat, voluntarily went away – trusting the People to continue on. This humility set the precedent and, imho, makes ol’ George the greatest. And this would be my example for Donald Trump, if I thought for one second that he’d care. I know the allegation that when Trump offered the VP slot to Kasich that he basically promised Kasich all the real power – so I suppose, in a certain perverted way, that Trump in this attempted delegation is showing a certain humility too. Basically, he’s skipped right over wanting to be an active, engaged king to being the figurehead – the distraction-in-chief. But hey, what’s an oligarchy or two as long as the Trump Brand is burnished (and some sort of selfish angle TBD is played). What a pair of bookends – George Washington and Donald Trump.

Now for Hillary, I chose Lincoln, although I could just as easily chose any of our greatest presidents – because they all have this quality to some extent. In his political lifetime, Abraham Lincoln had a nickname – Honest Abe. To his supporters this was a simple truth about his character. To his detractors it was sarcasm – “Honest” Abe. He was the compromise candidate – he won with only 39% of the vote in 1860. Between his election and his inauguration, the South seceded. He was trusted by neither the slaveholders to his right nor the abolitionists to his left. He was considered a moderate and a squish. Does this sound just a little bit familiar? He invited the abolitionists to push and pull him to their side, to give him cover as he made the tough decisions from that squishy middle. He had core principles but was also a pragmatic compromiser and because this was an uncompromising time, it ended up killing him. He was rabidly hated by some (to the point of war and assassination) mocked and mistrusted by others (almost to the point of losing said war) and generally and sometimes wrongfully blamed for everything that went wrong in real time. Hopefully, Hillary will have better luck. We’re not on the brink of civil war, afterall.

This has been your political sermen for today. Peace be with us. Amen.

“If we don’t win on November 8, I will consider this a tremendous waste of time, energy and money,” Trump said.

Well, I agree with him about something, anyway.
