I’m not sure how all of this stuff works. Does this mean Hogan won’t be able to touch the remaining 85 (of the promised 500) Days of Kristin that we are owed?

This is confusing to me. I understand that Mr. Thiel’s lawyers dropped one of the counts for which Gawker Media would have been insured for the express purpose of punishing/ruining Gawker Media, but how did he have access to Mr. Denton’s personal money? Was Gawker underinsured? Because I don’t think (would like to hear from personal injury lawyers about this) that plaintiffs get to specify who pays them (“In my lawsuit against Maroon Cartoons, $15 million will come from Betty Boop, $10 million from Jessica Rabbit,) only that they actually get paid.

    Can someone clue me in?

The lawyers were able to pierce the corporate veil in this case.

Curious: How long does it take to file and for a court to hear an appeal? Seems like in most cases like this, the defendant is protected until and unless the appeals fail. And I’m pretty confident that Gawker’s appeal will see this verdict overturned. But, let's face it, it will surprise no one to learn I’m not a lawyer.

Could be moot. Thiel just raised the stakes by deciding to live forever.

Years. In a big case like this, it can be close to a decade before things are settled.

The Wall St Journal is the most successful retail newspaper in America. (largest by circulation next to USA today, which has higher circ #s because its given away by hotels et al)

Could you have thought of a shittier example?

Word to the wise, Gawker Media staffers. You might start writing your names on your lunches in the breakroom fridge.

I’m not saying Nick is going to resort to sandwich theft, but the price of sandwich security is eternal vigilance.

You didn’t mention the part where Nick Denton got caught lying about the value of his company stock, which compelled the judge to rule that the Hulkster could start collecting that $$$$$$$$ immediately.

I bet Hogan thanks God every night that Nick Denton was born, and started aa blog in 2002.

You cant claim it worth amount X in court 1 (to put up a bond) and simultaneously claim it’s worth substantially smaller amount Y in court 2 (to file for bankruptcy) and not expect one or both Judges to shit on you when they find out.

Jezebel should have been spun off when their constant provoking of 4chan led to the “rape gif” epidemic that caused Gawker to implement this shitty grey post system.
