I love it when people whose parents helped support the massacre of my ancestors co-opt the ways their parents demonized those ancestors’ ancestors.

No, I’m talking about the Kochs using the term ‘blood libel’ on themselves when their father helped build a nazi oil refinery.

The Kochs’ primary concern now is “to preserve the country’s financial future, and to eliminate corporate welfare,” Charles said on Sunday.

The Kochs. Want to eliminate corporate welfare. The Kochs.

They have actually been very consistently anti-corporate welfare, meaning industry or company specific subsidies, tax breaks, and the like. They’ve also been consistently pro-gay marriage and criminal justice reform. The point is that you shouldn’t simply assume that your opponents are evil or that they are motivated by evil motives. It may be much more difficult to try to learn and understand what actually motivates your opinions, but doing so will make you a better person, even if it doesn’t change your mind.

Actions speak louder than words. They are not anti-corporate welfare.

“I don’t endorse everything about him. I certainly don’t endorse everything he says,” Walker said.

    What does that leave, Scott?

I love this statement. It lays bare the idiocy and cowardice of the mainstream Trump supporters (it’s hard to call Walker mainstream, but welcome to the GOP 2016 edition). You don’t agree with all of what he’s saying, you won’t acknowledge what of his beliefs you actual do like (and he has no actual policies), and all you can do is say you hate Hillary.

Serious question: Why aren’t more conservative supporting Gary Johnson? I fundamentally disagree with him on way too many issues, but for most GOPers, he’s right in line with a lot of what you want. Should he be pulling 25% of Republicans, or am I naive on where that party is right now?

Johnson supports the legalization of marijuana and access to health care and abortion. Anything that gives people some small modicum of either pleasure, security, or agency, the Republican Party of 2016 could never be for.

I think they’re mostly just cowards. If Trump wins, they’ll largely come crawling back to him (a horrible strategy, because, as shown by Chris Christie, Trump enjoys little more than humiliating the vanquished). If Trump loses, they’ll all point to these mealy-mouthed statements and say, “look, I never supported him!”

They’re hacking the DNC and DCCC for their bosses in Russian intelligence. Haven’t you been paying attention?

No baby is born Republican. It’s something like a callous one develops on the skin; a toughening against a constant irritant. It takes a good 12-15 years of poor nutrition and berating to make a staunch republican.

Those House and Senate and statehouse races are really important. They determine redistricting and state Supreme Court justices and school boards and voting rights laws, you name it. In a presidential election year, you can get some down-ticket boost from a presidential camdidate. But, while they’re awful, the Kochs are not dumb. They know they could lose the White House and still wind up having a crazy amount of influence over state and local laws, which are what most people live under most of the time.

This is something the Dem establishment never seems to understand. Instead we get party “Victory Funds” that channel the lion’s share to the Presidential campaign instead of downticket races, lousy GOTV efforts during midterm elections, and no real “dogcatcher-to-POTUS” talent-spotting pipeline.

If these guys are true Libertarians...why aren’t they supporting Gary Johnson? They certainly have the bank account to back a hell of a campaign.

As of now the Johnson and Stein are do nothings that draw voters from Hillary and Trump.

I feel like this is a spectacular case study in exactly what Washington meant in his farewell address regarding “The Spirit of Party”.

The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries which result gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of Public Liberty.

Yeah, Washington warned us about the GOP.

Of course, he also advocated for a strong central government and subservient states, so Republicans haven’t been on George Washington’s side for a very long time....
