    The only thing that makes me think this is actually a possibility is the fact that no one actually seems to care about the Melania photos. So if they did leak them as a distraction, it was a wholly incompetent strategy—which would keep it in line with everything else Trump’s campaign does.

      Living in the middle of nowhere, in a red state, I can say pretty safely that this will not go over well with conservative voters. It’s just giving conservative women another reason to quietly vote for Clinton.

    I don't believe that Trump himself has realized that this battle with Khan is bad optics for him. If anyone did set this up to take the heat off of Trump, it is probably Ivanka or Manafort. Trump never lets anything go (see also: Gonzalo Curiel).

      Because the writer described Melania Trump as “European.” It’s close enough geographically, with borders touching Italy, Austria and Hungary, but 46 years ago Yugoslavia wasn’t thought of as anything but an unruly Soviet satellite. People who are actually from the continent think of themselves, and describe themselves, as being from the nation they are from.
