So a positively-themed DNC with lots of joy, smiles and flags means the Democratic Party is going to become a war monger if elected?

    Not seeing the connection...

I do. It's called cowardly projection and blatant cognitive dissonance. Just an observation.

It is a problem if you are a progressive Bernie-or-Bust purist. Some folks are very protective of their particular identity and don’t wish it bestowed upon those whom they feel are unworthy.

Eh. Many of the USA chants were because it’s the easiest three syllables that drown out some of the protester chants, most of which were three syllables as well—not a sign of some blind nationalism.

Other times it was wholly acceptable. Democrats can be patriotic occasionally too, you know. And they put liberal and progressive values/ideas on display while doing so. When Khizr Khan spoke I was damn ready to drape an American flag around my naked body and run up and down the streets proclaiming my love.

Not to mention—it’s not like Repubs weren’t chanting “USA” their whole goddamn convention. It’s just that everything else that happened there was disgustingly un-American.

I think it was absolutely good, and the perfect counter to the RNC shitshow.

Eh. Most of everything at a convention is the sum total of American marketing. And it’s horrible.

Welp. Not enjoying it (which is your right) is different than saying Democrats being patriotic is a bad thing.

Nope. This is all wrong. I didn’t see a single Democrat carrying any guns during their convention. If I’ve learned anything about freedom, its that you need a gun to love it.

If you can’t blast a hole as big as Donald Trump’s asshole through your convention, how is that patriotic? Someone wanna explain that to me?

    “The ironing is delicious”.

The Democratic Party is opening their arms to those Republicans who reject Trump’s apartheid dreams, but yet the DNC Platform is the most progressive it has been in ages.

I hope for more sleepless nights for these pundits as they see their party eviscerated for its crimes against democracy.

And yet the entire platform, plan, rhetoric was wholly democratic bordering upon democratic-socialism with universal healthcare and free college. I’ve seen enough of these things over my lifetime (since Nixon, if you count the fact that I was in diapers) and they’re always very patriotic, no matter the party. Just one is usually rabidly so. This wasn’t rabid. This was reaching across the aisle. I was inspired. You’ll get there. Give it a few more decades.

Yeah, this was the Democrats giving America a big old hug. And it was a sincere hug. The warmth of the embrace was palpable.

Republicans, crotchety dicks that they are, want love too but all they got was:

GET DOWN IN THE BUNKER OR YOU’RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!!!!!!!!

      .....welfare isn’t socialism..........................

So long as the means of production in society are private and run for profit, there will never be socialism. Let’s stop with this absolute nonsense. Words have these things called definitions, you know.

This is by and large the dumbest post I’ve read on the convention.

Progressive politics is not exclusive from loving ones country, and the GOP doesn’t have exclusive rights to national symbols.

I love our country and want it to be the best it can be - more inclusive, better educated, less violent - representative of values worthy of leadership and in-step with our Constitution.

Feeling this way does not require gun ownership, hatred of those who are different, nor repression of intelligent discourse. Sorry.

It’s not dumb. It’s contemplative and I would bet a lot of us were thinking the same thing. I know I did. I was glad that it was in such contrast to the RNC and so positive and loving, but I also had that moment where I wondered if this was a good play. I don’t know if I thought of “war” so much but I wondered if the DNC would remind people of the Bush campaigns and in turn - some ugly shit.

      Possibly it was just fine.

Furthermore, the implication that “if these people like us, we’re doing something wrong” goes hand in hand with the predicate assumption that “these people are inherently the enemy and we should avoid associating with them at any and all costs”. That’s far less constructive than working off the idea of “these people love their country as much as we do, but have different ideas of how to achieve a goal.”

It’s one thing to reject an endorsement by the KKK. It’s another thing when establishment Republican pundits and politicians are horrified by the direction of their own party and make positive noises about the Democratic party, and liberals start thinking about how this is terrible for progressive goals.

You guys do a lot of clickbait (which is fine, it’s what you do), but this is one of my least favorite clickbaits I’ve seen. We NEED movement and change between parties. We NEED people moving across lines and seeing things from the other side’s perspective. The lack of movement, empathy and compromise is what’s kept us in political gridlock for years. Furthermore, there’s a big difference between loving America and full-blown nationalism. I don’t think any of what I saw at the DNC could be called nationalism, and I think a lot of the chanting of “USA” was done to show that it isn’t owned by those who would have us be exclusionary and fearful. “This is not the type of company the Democratic party has tended or wanted to keep, nor should it.” is a very current-Republican party statement. Kind of like how Trump dictates who he thinks shouldn’t be allowed in America because of what they believe. I should hope we aspire to be a party with diverse, opposing ideas. This is what Obama’s speech was about, people. Dialogue moves us forward. A lack of dialogue, competition and compromise is a big part of why the Republican party is in the shape it’s in this election cycle. Let’s not be that way.

Very well put. I agree that trying to separate political agendas into binary Us vs. Them or Good vs. Evil arguments nullifies the possibility of compromise, but I would argue that with the Republican party skewing further from the mainstream, any compromise will most likely skew further from the mainstream as well.

Of course, that’s assuming any compromise is possible, giving the ongoing trends.

This is a bad take. The Dems have always been full of flag waving patriots. The Republicans just did a good job at painting their “love the troops, hate the war” stance as anti-American.

Now the Republicans ditched some of their most effective symbols and talking points on the side of the road. You’re going to blame the Dems for picking them up and running with it?
