Yeah, I get it as a strategic move, but it’s deeply troubling. Today’s Democratic Party is already to the right of Nixon, and maybe even Reagan. Trump is now pushing them farther to the right. It really does suck.

Two things have contributed to Trump’s ascent:

    1. Billions in free media coverage.

    2. Saying what Republicans believe out loud instead of using dog whistles and code words.

      3. Absolute, undying, and pure Hillary hatred from almost all on the right and many on the left.

Seriously. Almost as much of this election has been #neverHillary as it has been #neverTrump. If the nominee was anyone but Hillary, Dems would all be laughing and shaking hands and congratulating each other in back rooms right now. This is not a knock on Hillary. This is just the product of decades of attacking and attacking and attacking, whether substantive or not, until both sides are literally calling for her head.

Not to mention, the other Republican candidates mostly gave him a free ride in the hope of eventually scooping up the base he had accumulated.

Anyone who thinks Trump is a Republican isn’t paying attention. Trump isn’t an anything. Trumps doesn’t believe a single god damn word he says. He is an opportunist who wanted to be president, looked at the field and said “Which side is more likely to embrace me?”. I would like to think it wouldn’t have been the left (although the Democrats did just nominate a Wall Street darling so who knows). But the right is far more likely to root for the billionaire real estate mogul today. So he went that way.

Remember that just a couple years ago he was a Democrat donating to get Hillary elected and best golf buddies with Bill. You’re dense if you think he wouldn’t sell out the GOP in a heartbeat, and wave a gay-pride flag outside a Planned Parenthood clinic while kissing a muslim immigrant as he signs checks to pay off student loans if he thought it would make him more money and gain more power in the long run.

A surprising number of Trump supporters don’t believe what he says, either. “Oh, he’s not going to actually build a wall. Everybody knows that.”

The “not being an actual member of the party but picking the one most likely to elect him” sounds exactly what Bernie tried to do, but the Democrats weren’t having any of it. Trump successfully invaded and took over the GOP. The GOP will now be destroyed. Bernie’s invasion failed. I am not sorry about that.

Republican’s feelings towards Donald Trump can be summed up in this tale:

When I was in college we had friend who had an extremely attractive mom. Of course, being a bunch of male college age pigs we subjected our friend to comments about what we’d like to do with his mother in bed.

One day she came to visit him and, with pretty much all of us in the room, he casually told her about how we were always commenting how we’d like to have sex with her.

Needless to say we were all horrified and left with our mouths agape as we clumsily tried to deny such things in a way that clearly showed we were lying.

We were pretty pissed at out buddy afterwards (fortunately the mom had a sense of humor about it) but why were we upset? It wasn’t because he has said anything that was untrue. It was because he had violated the unwritten rule that said you’re not supposed to SHARE these things with others........especially the person that it’s directed at.

When Republicans get all upset and embarrassed at Trump when he talks about his views on women, minorities, immigration, etc. It’s not because they’re upset that he’s saying things that are untrue, but he’s violating the unwritten rule within the Republican Party that you’re never supposed to share these things openly.

They have no problem BEING a bunch of heartless hate filled bigots and racists.........They just don’t want their own to ever tell the outside world “Yep, that’s who we are” because then they’re put in a position where they have to run around in a panic sputtering “No....that’s not true, real conservatives aren’t like that......we believe in liberty and justice for all. God bless America” and it derails their agenda they’ve been carrying out for decades to pretty much put the screws to all these various groups.

the Republican Party overwhelmingly chose Trump

Except that’s false — Trump won slightly less than 45% of the total popular vote in the Republican primary: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republica… (Contrast this with Romney getting 52.1% of the total popular vote in the 2012 Republican primary: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republica… ) In fact, Trump basically never broke 50% of the vote in any state until late in the contest when his delegate lead was becoming insurmountable, which almost certainly depressed turnout for the remaining candidates’ supporters.

And Trump was fourth place in endorsements from Republican Party officials: http://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2016-endorseme… Meanwhile, Ted Cruz — the man that we were repeatedly told was utterly hated by the Republican Party establishment — got more than twice as many endorsements as Trump, so it can’t be said that the party’s leadership “overwhelmingly” chose him anymore than the voters did.

WTF? What does the Romney numbers have to do with this race. He won overwhelmingly this year. 2016, the year that counts man. How much did the next highest candidate in 2016 have? The next highest candidate was more than 50% lower than Trump. If that’s not an overwhelming majority of this year’s voters, then I’m a tap dancing banana slug. Jesus. Unbelievable how people try to bring utter nonsense into the mix just to defend their politics.

And when did endorsements become a determining factor in deciding the nomination? Can you Trump popular vote by endorsements? Last I checked popular vote and delegates are how candidate are chosen, but then again, I could be a tap dancing banana slug.

You need to work on your reading skills because I explicitly explained why I was referencing endorsements. When someone says “the Republican Party overwhelmingly” did something, that could be read as referring to something done by either the voters of the Republican Party or the leadership of the Republican Party. My point was that Trump neither received “overwhelming” support from Republican voters (he did worse than Romney; for that matter he did worse than McCain in 2008, worse than George W. Bush in 2000, worse than Bob Dole in 1996, and worse than Ronald Reagan in 1980) nor did he receive “overwhelming” support from the Republican Party leadership (even John Kasich got more endorsements than Trump).

As for why the reference to the earlier primaries, it’s ridiculous to claim that saying that someone won a competition by an “overwhelming” amount is defined in a complete vacuum from all other examples of that competition. No one with an ounce of intellectual honesty would claim that a baseball team that won a game by 2 runs to 1 run “overwhelmingly” won that game because there are obviously many other examples of baseball games being won by far larger margins.

If you can’t see a notable difference between the crass & bombastic rhetoric employed by Donald Trump in service to bad ideals and policies and the more temperate rhetoric employed by their last nominee, Mitt Romney, in service of bad ideals and policies that are largely similar (though they have some notable differences), you either aren’t observing the Republican party closely enough to be qualified to comment on what is or is not “Republican”, or you are just willfully ignoring what you know to be true in order to make a point.

That is what Barack Obama was speaking to.

No, look… Shut up. Donald Trump is not a Republican. Donald Trump is an American. And he knows what America needs. We’re not building a wall to keep the Mexicans out. We’re building a wall to keep the Mexicans IN. We’re going to build the wall tighter and tighter so that we squeeze all the Cholula out of them until there is nothing left and THAT’s when we shove gravy and Goodyear tires down their throats and they become true Americans. We’d be fine with Muslims if they were all coal farmers or whatever but instead they want to spend all their time designing belts and belts are for fucking French people. Americans don’t fucking need belts, if they need to keep their pants up they just eat more so they get fatter.

Trump/Sobchak ‘16. Vote or Don’t. This determines who enters the next round robin.
