Notice that she’s got herself in the classic volleyball form for “the set”?

In competitive volleyball, another sport that like soccer is loved and revered the world over except for in the US so obviously our female athletes are top tier teams, there’s three very specific forms for the return volley. There is “the bump”, which takes the initial shock of the other team’s attempt. This is followed by “the set”, which puts the ball in the most suitable position for return. Lastly there is “the spike”, where you smash the ball as furiously as possible to where you are most likely to score or gain control of the ball.

She’s doing her part, getting us all ready to score. This quiet homage to the success of women athletes and how that success has helped reshape our characterization of women in general as a society is also a very well structured message to the activists and operators. She is going to do her part and get us ready to take control and make progress. She’s doing her part, positioning and calculating so that we can act. She’s doing her part so that together we can win.

It’s time to smack our balls in Trump’s face!

      +1 for the volleyball reference.

As a former semi-professional player myself I have always enjoyed a session of “pepper,” where two people share a volleyball experience unlike any other. There is no net and there are no rules.

Commonly used as a warmup among the world’s top volleyball players, “peppering” is an endless loop of volleyball practice. The activity begins when one person “bumps” the volleyball to the other person. The receiver of the “bump” then “sets” the volleyball back to the first person who then “spikes” [usually softly] the volleyball back to the other. This fun can last hours and will not only improve your volleyball skills but also your attention span and hand-eye coordination. This fun activity is somewhat rare in the United States, but very common in the volleyball havens of South Africa and Papa New Guinea.

You know, it’s funny. Since I signed up for this Gawker account on Tuesday I’ve been thinking of how many delightful conversations I’ve had with other Hillary supporters and former Bernie supporters that now support Hillary because Bernie endorsed Hillary and even said that she was a better candidate than him and a better fit as leader of “The Revolution,” and well, I’ve always had this thought in the back of my head that these constant back and forths in the comment section were much like “peppering.” I guess it’s true, sometimes the zaniest thoughts are those that reflect the realities of life the best. I think it was Oscar Wilde that first said “I had the weirdest dream last night - I was standing here talking to you just as we are now.” Looks like this time the proof really is in the pudding.

Man, this Friday is getting off to a great start. If this is what Friday morning holds I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the weekend.

I played volleyball (pretty well, one of my better sports) and I still didn’t get all of this, but the gist is clear.

      And YES.

Did anyone miss the balloon drop because they were still holding their cards for the trick photo? I know there was a great deal of concern regarding that issue.

So, much of the talk about the Democratic Convention is how the Democrats have become the party of patriotism. They always were, but Democrats can both love their country and recognize that it has flaws. So many of the GOP loved the country like it was a child that you couldn’t say anything bad about. They want their country back, what the fuck does that even mean?

It's a white thing. It's best discussed through a sheet around a roaring fire, preferably cross-shaped.

They always leave out the last part. “We want our country back ... to the 1950s, when the coloreds and ladies and Jews and f-gs knew their places and when white men with only a high school education could buy a house for a nickel down.”

It should be noted that all the vegan-friendly, gluten-free balloons at the DNC were locally sourced from fair trade organic rubber trees.

My favorite part of arguments like that is the assumption that you can’t have been paid as a speaker AND have inexpensive education for kids. Kind of like how R’s love to talk about how Krugman makes so much money.
