i didn’t want to bog this post down with numbers but this LA Times article says that VH1 Classic made $72 million in revenue, with about half of that being profit. i find it hard to believe that MTV couldn’t license its old shows to streaming services for like double that per year.

Olvídese de tratar de dirigirse a todos los Millenials . Lo que necesitan es una nueva marca garantizada para atraer a los Millenials Hispanos: MTV: Mi Tia’s Vagina.

My god just showing A Flock of Seagulls on repeat forever and ever and ever and ever would occupy my amphetamine-fueled late-night orgies of melancholia for the next billion years.

I’ve thought that for years as apparently, music videos are still being made and that used to be a YUGE deal....now, not so much, I guess.

How would that help? We have YouTube and Vevo for that now, on demand. No one is going to watch MTV for music videos.

Yea, I’m not sure what generation the shows were targeting. I’m a millenial (born 1990), and I just watched the entire Daria series on Hulu for the first time. I fuckin loved it, but I def didn’t watch it as a kid or a teen.

Except bands can post their vids direct on YT, Vevo, Vimeo or sell them for $1.99 on iTunes or Amazon and get that ad/sales $$$ direct.

There are a TON of bands who make videos that aren’t on iTunes or Amazon, and I’m sure if they had the option to screen their shit on MTV, they would. MTV could show old vidoes, fuckin’ make some sort of deal where they can show new videos. I don’t know. They should be showing MUSIC VIDEOS, that’s what I’m saying. Not goddamn MTV Cribs from a million years ago.

Millennials treat music as nothing more than background noise - a “soundtrack to their selfies.”

YouTube made MTV completely obsolete. Any band can (and most do) have a YouTube channel with all of their music videos on it on-demand 24/7. They can host ads before them if they wish (getting a direct cut of the revenue no less), and fans can make their own video playlists or watch those created by others for free. YouTube’s algorithm will even autoplay more videos in the same genre for you if you like. Literally no one needs MTV anymore - not the artists, not the fans, not the labels. Nobody. It served a purpose in the 80s and 90s but that era is over and it’s time for it to die now. RIP.

Hey, here’s an idea: Why not have a premium-cable channel devoted to music?

I mean, not just music videos, but filmed, concerts, documentaries about musical acts, music reviews, music news ... that sort of thing? I mean, it’s a crazy idea, right? Am I just being crazy here?

Who wants to watch that old shit?

Jersey Shore was only interesting b/c it was the lay person’s first real exposure to BROness. It’s everywhere now. Road Rules, Real World, Daria, Jackass....it’s all tired and ancient.

Years ago The Onion had a story about the launch of MTV3 or one of their other efforts at starting another music-video-only channels, with one of the jokes being that the channel’s first video was “Juvenile Reality Programming Killed the Video Star.”
