Did you know white people can be arrogant and think the’re the superior race? It’s amazing how white people never see racism when it’s all around them. They don’t care about blacks or spanish. For them this is white America. Well guess what? Grassroots America is dying. America is a melting pot. America is for everyone. So yeah many latinos do care that Kaine speaks spanish.

I don’t get why people think Latinxs wouldn’t care about a white person taking that much of an active interest in something so important to them.

Was it weird when he revealed that Obama’s been a Muslim the whole time? And why did he do it in Spanish? I feel like the people who would really care about that probably didn’t understand what he was saying.

Jeb Bush might fill them in, if he was watching.

I was more blown away by when he revealed what REALLY happened to Vince Foster. Can you believe she confessed to him???

The idea of a Vice President Kaine sprinkling controversial shit into speeches in Spanish for 8 years is reason enough...

Kaine started slow, came across as a dorkier John Kasich at first that admittedly made me cringe as I rocked back and forth whispering “they’re blowing it...they’re blowing it...”, but goddammit did he bring it by the end of the speech. Feel good about the pick.

He’s not that great as a speaker, but he seems genuine, so genuine that I’m not sure why he’s in politics.

He’s in it because of what he was taught in Jesuit High School — to help other people. It’s a somewhat anachronistic concept, to be an altruist, but I think he genuinely is one. It’ll be nice to have someone who’s in it for the right reasons in the VP seat.

Yes, this really captures my feelings about Kaine well. I think Catholics like Kaine and Biden really take to heart the importance of not faith alone, and that works are how you spread the message of Jesus. As an ex Catholic agnostic, stuff like that still makes me feel a tinge of pride.

He gets endless praise for being a Jesuit “missionary.” (Was he actually trying to convert people?) If he was a Republican he’d get pilloried by the left for being a cultural imperialist.

He helped out at a Jesuit school, and taught welding and carpentry. The students probably had to attend services weekly or daily.

Echoing what helgaperez said and also pointing out that he was a Catholic in an overwhelmingly Catholic country. Doubt there were many conversions going on.

This makes me wonder which politician does the best impressions. No doubt most of them are various animal calls of some sort—mating, courting, post-courtial—but I bet some of them do voice and physical impressions. Tim Kaine very much sucks at this. Hillary is much better; she’s pretended to be a Democrat for so long.

People here who are sneering at Kaine’s use of Spanish throughout his speeches must not be from immigrant families. I am and I know my parents and older relatives are ALWAYS impressed and appreciative when a non-Korean can speak a few phrases. It means that person is trying to communicate in a way that makes them feel comfortable. The expectation is usually that non-natives accommodate the majority culture.

I guarantee you that Kaine’s effort to speak to Hispanics in their mother tongue is a big deal for people who are surrounded 24/7 by a culture that is indifferent or sometimes hostile toward them for not speaking flawless English.

But he doesn’t just speak a few phrases - he is fluent. It’s only pandering if he were to learn a few lines for the speech. He genuinely loves and has lived the culture.

I mean, it’s good if it’s there naturally, but I largely agree. That said, Kaine is only “boring” given the kind of candidate we had in 2008 and 2012. I mean, is anyone going to tell me this guy is as boring as Al Gore, Joe Lieberman, and John Kerry? lol
