    This is a common trope in the south nowadays, to argue that slavery wasn’t all that bad. Also common and typically spoken in the same breath is the argument that freedmen owned slaves too (ignoring the fact that they had to because slaves often couldn’t be freed). There’s a great podcast called Us vs. Them put out by West Virginia Public Broadcasting (of all media) that covers this in a few episodes.

    For those of you keeping score at home:

    Asking a deadbeat white rancher to pay his overdue bills: Tyranny.

    Black people being owned as actual property: Not That Bad.

    A heavily armed white militia taking over a federal wildlife refuge and threatening to murder any law enforcement officers who try to arrest them: Patriotism.

    Asking police officers to not shoot unarmed black men who aren’t posing an immediate threat to them: Anti-cop hatred.

    Huh, there seems to be a pattern here, but I just can’t seem to put my finger on it.
