I have a hard time believing this story. For all his faults, Trump has a pretty good track record of fulfilling promises he has made and compensating people fairly and promptly for the work they have performed on his behalf.

I despise Trump with every fiber of my being, and am apparantly one of the few people actually excited to vote for Hillary. But seriously, what the fuck was this dude expecting?

I think he was expecting basic compensation for services rendered. Objectively speaking, no one should expect that the frontrunner (now nominee) for president from one of the two major political parties would shortchange someone for 2500 dollars. Any other candidate and this would be a given. I think the reason people like this are surprised at how brazenly Donald Trump rips people off is that its completely unprecedented: Even crooked candidates put on a decent face while running for President. The fact that our political landscape has gotten to the point where this kind of bullshit can actually happen is baffling to conceive of, and I’m not surprised he (and I’m sure it will come out, many others) was swindled.

After Madoff was publicly arrested and indicted with running the biggest Ponzi scheme in American history, there were STILL people who expected to get back their full investment plus all of the fake profits that he promised them. Even when the bankruptcy trustee explained that it was all a scam and that their final account statements were essentially fiction, they still expected and demanded to get all that money out.

It doesn’t matter how obvious a scam is; it doesn’t even matter if the person has confessed to being a scammer. There will always be guys like this who believe they’ll be an exception, that giving their money or their time/their kids’ time to someone who doesn't believe in integrity is somehow going to pay off for them even though it hasn't for anyone else.

In response to the many many lawsuits that have been filed against him for nonpayment of invoices, Trump has said that he frequently deducts the cost of contractor errors and substandard work from the invoice before payment. It’s a standard business practice apparently.

If the spirit fingers were done in a shoddy or lackluster fashion, they aren't entitled to full compensation.

There was not a single Trump rally or press conference during the primaries that didn’t have a glaring audio or video issue, so that podium is hardly surprising.

It IS surprising that the guy expected payment of $2500 when they couldn’t even bother to move the podium for the girls.

It’s just as well that these children learn the lesson that party candidates never fulfill the promises they make during a campaign. Otherwise they may grow up to be bitter young adults whose dreams have been shattered and burned to the ground, the taste of ashes in their mouths, and darkness stretching to the horizon before them.

The first event didn’t come to fruition, and Popick says he asked for $2,500 in payment for the second performance, in Pensacola. The campaign made a counter-offer: How about a table where the group could pre-sell albums? Popick took the deal.

This doesn’t surprise me in the least based on what I have read about dealing with Trump as a business man. This article from USA Today that I read really gives a good idea. Some excerpts:

During the Atlantic City casino boom in the 1980s, Philadelphia cabinet-builder Edward Friel Jr. landed a $400,000 contract to build the bases for slot machines, registration desks, bars and other cabinets at Harrah’s at Trump Plaza.

The family cabinetry business, founded in the 1940s by Edward’s father, finished its work in 1984 and submitted its final bill to the general contractor for the Trump Organization, the resort’s builder.

Edward’s son, Paul, who was the firm’s accountant, still remembers the amount of that bill more than 30 years later: $83,600. The reason: the money never came. “That began the demise of the Edward J. Friel Company… which has been around since my grandfather,” he said.

And this article from the Wall Street Journal (may be behind a pay wall)

Larry Walters, whose Las Vegas drapery factory supplied Mr. Trump’s hotel there eight years ago, said the developer, Trump Ruffin, wouldn’t pay for additional work it demanded beyond the original contract. When Mr. Walters then refused to turn over some fabric, sheriff’s deputies burst into his factory after Trump Ruffin sued him. Trucks took the fabric away.

Mr. Walters said he never had payment problems with other casino or hotel clients. A review of Las Vegas court records showed no other legal disputes over payments involving him. Mr. Walters agreed to a settlement with Trump Ruffin that was about $380,000 short of what he said he was owed, court records show. He settled, he said, because “they were going to drag it on for many, many years.”

If for whatever reason the Trump-Pence campaign asked me to do some Electrical Engineering work for them (I have no idea why they would), I wouldn’t necessarily say no. A job is a job after all, and extra money is always welcome. But I wouldn’t work for a table to promote myself. Cash only, and part of it up front. Given his history, I wouldn’t take less.
