I’m really struggling to understand the end game for Bernie supporters. Democratic conventions have always had protesters from the far left. However their vitriol has become more bitter and obsessive than ever before. Again, Bernie and Hillary have almost identical platforms on most issues. Disagree with those issues that aren’t similar if you must, but why burn it all down? What’s the point of anarchy when the wolf is at the door?

First it’s about sending a message that they’re fed up with the BS rigged system. You can argue about how rigged the system is or if that’s a good thing or both, but there’s no question the system is rigged. People are also tired of being told shit up and vote for the candidate we tell you to. I’ve been hearing this “lesser of two evils” BS since before I could vote and lord knows I’m sick of hearing it. The fact is you see this on both sides of the spectrum, the major difference being that there were enough candidates on the right that people got the change they wanted through dilution of the establishment influence. They couldn’t coalesce the big money and the party machinery behind a single establishment candidate like the DNC did so while they have a crazy candidate their base is appeased.

The other problem of course is many don’t believe that Hillary cares about the issues she recently decided “move left” on. Fair or not she’s seen as someone who will say and do almost anything to get into office, but what she will actually do once there is anyone’s guess. When voters don’t believe you’ll actually fight for their issues they’ll protest. I think it really is as simple as that.

Because their rhetoric, for nearly a year, demands it.

“Revolution”, “movement”, “corruption”, “establishment”, “fight”, “we the people”

These are great motivators because they link people’s emotions to the candidate. They no longer support policies, they believe in the cause.

That is a very important distinction, as I believe is not something I typically associate with rational decision making.

So I’ve been half-watching the YouTube stream all evening and maybe it’s just the stream, but it looks like whoever did the lighting was inept. Everyone on stage looks sick, especially people of darker skin tones.

ETA: John Podesta is on right now, and his skin tone isn’t all that dark, but he looks sick too. Look. Tell me it’s not just me.

On the plus side, the crowd looks super diverse and beautiful and what I in my naive mind imagine America all over to look like.

I wonder if we’ll see BobbySerious doing important things on the live feed!

The crowd lighting is actually much better than the stage lighting!

And all the Bernie Bros from the internet took the bus here to yell.

I dunno, just returned from a week in Humboldt County, and all the hippie buses were firmly parked and rusting into the sand. I didn’t see a single one that could’ve made it over the Klamath Mountains, let alone across the country. A bunch were trying to hitchhike out though....

I’m not sure when the harvest is, but I’m pretty sure that wasn’t fog I drove through in Arcata.

Watching the convention now - it’s going great - unity, intelligence, passion, strength. Love my country, love my party.

I’m a Democrat and this isn’t my first rodeo. Of course the wee ones are cranky and fussy - but they will learn and grow and be lifelong Democrats. It’s going great.

But how will this crowd receive Bill Clinton?

And more importantly, and in the spirit of throwing out red meat for the trolls, will he lie about how they receive him under oath?

“All the Democrats had to do was have an uneventful, competently run convention. That’s it. Just four days where nothing horrible and embarrassing happened, with no ridiculous organizational fuckups or humiliating own goals.”

Well then mistake 1 was holding the damn thing in Philly. That population prides itself on hate whether it be hate of their own sports teams or their political candidates.

“The problem is that the modern convention is supposed to be a coronation”

Well Clinton thought she was being coronated when she announced she was running, so the fact that there's dissent shouldn't be all that surprising by now.
