Trump did everything but come out in a brown shirt and a red armband. This wasn’t Nixon ‘68, this was George Wallace. This was Strom Thurmond. This was Mussolini. Everything would be bright and happy and everyone would get everything they want, if only they give him the power and glory he deserves. And the bad people will get what’s a-comin’ to ‘em. Erdogan would be proud.

I will give Trump this much: He sure as hell motivated me to vote in November. Just not the way he intended. This is nothing less than American fascism.

I desperately hope to be able look back on this time and laugh. But I will settle for just feeling a tremendous sense of relief instead.

More dystopian Buchananism “you need me (Freudian I need you- ‘I LOVE YOU’- actual speech ending sign-off instead of God bless America) I will protect you” demagoguery, but yeah.

*this can’t even be edited for clarity, so tight is the monkeyfist of power-drenched pathos that is the GOP offering this year.

Paraphrasing one of my friends here, but: if a black man with two ex-wives, five kids by three different women, and a current wife who is an immigrant with no college degrees ran for president of the USA, he would be called every immoral, trifling, poor decision-making, unfit name in the book. So, tell me again how we’re in a post-racial society.

I’m sure David Duke and his ilk would have a lot of racist shit to say about that.

And don’t forget the flipside: Barack and Michelle, both Ivy League educated, married once, “legitimate” children only, not a whiff of scandal about their personal lives, success, family, genius: painted by the same people as stupid, unaccomplished, “ghetto”, etc. I sometimes wonder if these people have any ability to pretend at this point, or if they can just look themselves in the mirror and say, “Yes, I am racist. But that’s correct because fjlkjglkfg”

If the bankruptcies and divorces and hair and tiny raccoon hands didn’t make him question himself, not sure why that would bother him.

“I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side ... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.” - Robert Byrd Democratic Senator

Funny, that tired attack is so common, the Washington Post wrote an article about it.

Also, you failed to mention that after the Civil Right Act was passed most Southern racist Democrats became Republicans.

David Duke wasn't one of the highest elected officials in the United States. Defending a racist isn't usually your thing.

David Duke summed it up pretty well.

They’re crawling out of the woodwork, thanks to Trump’s birtherism and his dog whistles.

Dog whistles indicate veiled racism. There is nothing veiled about what Trump says. He is pretty up front about that shit.

Good point. Trump is building on the dog whistles that have been emanating from the Republican camp for decades.

It was an appalling speech from a dangerous man. He came across as a dictator-to-be, not a president-to-be. And many of them lapped it up.

Race as a biological concept doesn’t exist. It’s only useful in contemporary life to a) explain sustained discriminatory patterns and b) identify fucking assholes like David Duke.

Well yes, of course most things are social constructs. The difference between saying that money is a social construct and race is a social construct is that people already know that money is a man made concept. You’d be surprised by how many people don’t know that race isn’t biologically based.

You can do it if you’re the greatest and have the best ideas. Trump would explain it to us, but our little brains wouldn’t grasp what he’s saying.

You know, I thought we had reached the nadir of right wing theatrics at the RNC with Clint Eastwood haranguing an empty chair, but holy shit did it ever devolve further. When we the last time we had a crowd chanting for an actual literal execution of the other party’s nominee? Ben Carson said she was related to Lucifer! The least harsh thing said about Clinton in that depraved circus tent was that she should be in jail. And Trump’s speech was pure unabashed fascism.

In a way I’m glad his nomination convinced the GOP that they didn’t have to dogwhistle anymore and could just come right out and vent all their racist, sexist, unconstitutional insanity. All the cards are on the table now, this is what the GOP believes in and they’re not hiding it anymore.
