So if he shot the black guy by mistake, why did he handcuff him and not the autistic guy?

This is certainly one way to solve the problem of autism. I believe this country has enough guns to fully eradicate the disorder.

I know/think this is probably a joke but it's really upsetting. I'm an autistic woman, I have a lot of austistic friends. A lot of us already feel like most of society thinks that about us, it's really painful to read that even as a deeply sarcastic statement.

Act like a thug and you’ll be treated like a thug.

Also, act like a law-abiding citizen and you’ll be treated like a thug. Act in compliance with police directions and you’ll be treated like a thug. Act in a manner to deescalate the situation and you’ll be treated like a thug. Act like someone surrendering to police authority and you’ll be treated like a thug. Act like someone who is unarmed and poses no threat to the police and you’ll be treated like a thug.

Basically, exist as a black man in America in 2016 and you’ll be treated like a thug.

I can’t figure out whether it is an improvement over when Mr. Kinsey reportedly asked the officer after having been shot, “Sir, why did you shoot me?” and the officer reportedly responded, “I don’t know.”

Only much later when we’re able to ‘Monday-morning quarterback’ do we find out that it’s a toy.

    Unreal.

“You shot someone who was holding a toy?”

“Look the point is, he was holding SOMETHING. Jeez, anyone can be a Monday-morning quarterback.”

To be fair, Kinsey had removed the orange safety tip. I mean, it does look like a lethal toy train without it, and they had to make a snap decision during that 10 minute stand off.

Well gun nuts have assured me that if you ban guns, everyone will go around killing each other with baseball bats, tire irons, chunks of concrete, telephone directories and any other sufficiently bulky item, so I think they can treat toy trains as a lethal threat.

It appeared to the officers that the white male was trying to do harm to Mr. Kinsey. The officers, realizing and believing that there was a firearm — many officers thought the white male had a firearm. Only much later when we’re able to ‘Monday-morning quarterback’ do we find out that it’s a toy.

I hope none of these fucking idiots on the scene is going for detective anytime soon. Did any of them notice that the guy who was “in danger” was desperately trying to tell them everything was fine, that it was a toy truck?

Now this is a crazy Catch 22. If you believe, by default, black people to be criminals and liars, then if he’s telling you everything is fine, then he *must* be lying and be in danger. So that theoretically could explain why the officer still fired.

Doesn’t explain why he handcuffed the black guy after “accidentally” shooting him, though.

Black absorbs light, rather than reflecting it. This incident, while regrettable, illustrates that light exists simultaneously as a wave, a particle, and a bullet.

This isn’t the police department speaking, it’s the union for the cop who shot. It’s very likely that this is to simply kick the blame laterally to the dispatcher, or upstairs to whoever made the choice to deploy an armed response.

What’s really getting lost here is that the overall problem is that cops were called into a situation they clearly had very little to go on, and they didn’t work to get a better read on it. That to me shows a very bad culture that comes from the top —when you treat every incident where somebody *thinks* there’s a gun as a reason for armed response, then you’re simply trigger happy.

And really, this is the consequence of stupid training of police forces, and that goes right up to the DHS and DOJ. We’ve created a scenario in this country where the feds have cops getting trained to swarm onto every situation that smells like a “active shooter”/”terrorist” with guns ablaze. Nevermind that spree shootings, terrorism, etc. are actually rare —much rarer than close calls or incidents involving the mentally handicapped or emotionally disturbed, where there seems to be zero federal training in how to not make a bad situation worse.
