The man is getting paid, what, $40m to leave the company after decades of harassing women there? Truly, that is grotesquely unfair.

The very reliable Internet high-profile net worth valuation service says he’s worth $25 million, with a salary that was $7 million year. Nothing to sneeze at but I totally expected those figures would be much higher.

That’s an impressive amount of money he’s spending a year. I expected that $25 to be a little higher too :D

Sexual harassment is awful. Sexual harassment from a fat, balding, dewlapped old letch is 3X awful. Maybe 4X.

Roger Ailes may be deficient in many qualities, but vanity is not one of them. Look at most photographs of the guy, and he’s walking around in TV pancake makeup. His professional headshots are done up with enough Gaussian blur/soft focus that’s strong enough to make George Burns look like David Gest.

Since people were using the Jabba-licks-Leia GIF for the setup, it’s only fair to use this GIF for the conclusion.

He chose to resign because he would have been dumped on his ass otherwise.

I wonder how many of the Fox News “talent” that Ailes’ lawyers said would walk if he left will follow through on that. My guess is roughly zero.

IMHO, the resignation is likely designed to be a way to resolve the lawsuit as quietly as possible for Fox. Remember that Carlson’s lawsuit was filed against Ailes and not Fox News itself, because she’s banned from suing them by an arbitration clause (and probably by terms of a severance package).

The money Fox is giving Ailes is very likely meant to be a way for them to give him enough to cover a settlement with Carlson (and whoever else sued), preventing Fox from getting subpoenaed in a court case. And the money will be very hard for Carlson to refuse.

The thing that inherently sucks about use of civil suits to get any measure of justice is that it is very, very easy for the plaintiffs to get caught in a form of financial Stockholm Syndrome —e.g., you don’t really want to bankrupt somebody from whom you expect compensation, so you cut them slack. Really, this is why we need an actual ERA in this country, so that we’re not resorting to litigation all the time.

I can only think of a few Fox “journalists” that would be able to get a job anywhere else if they quit.

Chickens coming home to roost, in a spectacular fashion here. The GOP allowed itself to be hijacked by Fox News, which kept winnowing the party’s base to an ever smaller slice of older and whiter people. Trump swooped in like a vulture to feast on that carcass, and now, as the GOP nominates him as their leader, Fox News implodes, foreshadowing the GOP’s inevitable fate.

I don’t think you should be pouring the champagne just yet. I don’t see Fox News going anywhere any time soon.
