How about we all just let women worry about their own tits and how they are/are not supported....or was that the point of the article?

The point of the article is that the author needed to hand something in to the editor and had procrastinated until he had only forty five minutes to go.

Millennials are now aged 35. Teens are no longer millennials. Olds will have to come up with a scarier name.

I’m so glad that willowy A-cup rich girls still get to wander the tree-lined streets of their parents’ suburban neighborhoods undergarment-less and without consequence. Working-class chicks like me with huge knockers will continue to be forced into full coverage boulder holders while the patriarchy tells us we’re slutty and undeserving. Thanks, America!

Jack Shafer, a Politico media writer, is famous for busting (no pun intended) what he calls “fake trends” articles — that is, articles written about societal trends that appear, on close examination, to be totally unsupported or knitted together by bad statistics or quirky anecdotes.

This article had a lot of the hallmarks of that. If you look closely, the author’s case is built on searches from a single website, a recent but not mind blowing number of views on a YouTube video, the uncritically accepted assumption that not wearing a push-up bra is the same as not wearing any bras at all. The author then makes the leap that these fashion choices — which he hasn’t actually proven is real yet! — are some kind of empowerment statement.

It’s a house of cards, with one unsupported assumption being used to justify the next. Shafer would absolutely wreck this thing. It wouldn't even be hard.

Even so, who gives a shit? That’s a serious question. The original article is on par with the Washington Post’s coverage of why millennials don’t eat cereal.

How are either one of these topics of any relevance to anyone?

It’s definitely not an important article, but my point is that I think that it’s bad journalism too. You see these same tropes (dodgy statistics, unspoken and unsupported assumptions) in articles about really important topics too.

Once the batteries die, they lose all support. Anything more than a brisk walk and women risk serious injury.

Why can’t these ding-dang millennials get it together, find a job, move out of their parents’ house and wear an underwire bra? Or not wear an underwire bra? Whichever they are doing or not doing?

Because then they would have to move their artisanal bra sweatshop out of their parent’s basement.

Does “empowering” still have any meaning as a word or has it become a sort of linguistic packing peanut?
