This must be the war against tyranny that the founding fathers had in mind.

Definitely. And such wars are carried out by “militias” who can be best described as “well-regulated.” Just like the Founding Fathers planned.

Ammosexuals have been saying for years they have a constitutionally protected right to shoot police. Of course, they couch their bullshit in terms of “tyrannical gubmint”, then get outraged when agents of the “tyrannical gubmint” get shot.

Dumb fucks - what did you think would happen? Who do you think the “tyrannical” government is? Guess what - it’s not going to be Michelle Obama, guns blazing, kicking in your front door. It’s going to be police and the military, were it to come to that. So these fucks have been saying for years we have a constitional right to shoot police, they’re just too fucking dumb to understand their idiotic talking points.

Then they act surprised when someone does take action against the government. It’s all just too stupid to even consider.

Dead children weren’t our Australia moment. Dead cops weren’t our Australia moment. This shit is just going to keep going and going and going.

No, Wayne. More guns is not the answer to too many guns.

Sucks that police throughout the country have created and perpetuated the "Us vs. Them" dynamic for decades... I guess they're getting what they were aiming for, a military style conflict between opposing sides, rather than partnership with the communities they are intended to serve.

If the police are in a “war” then eventually the ones they are at war with will eventually engage them.

You know what else helped? When police departments across the country had their budgets and payrolls slashed as a result of the Great Recession and Republican obstructionism in 2009-2012.

Oakland, California, for one example, with the fifth highest crime rate in America, slashed a quarter of its police force in 2012 due to budget shortfalls.

I worked in IT for a small California police department for 11 years. Departments around the country have been undermanned for years due to these budget cuts, which all trickle down from the federal budget to the states. I watched the small department I worked for lose 20% of its officers in one year. Fewer officers mean higher response times to 911 calls, less police oversight, more officers pulling double shifts, and more stressed out, paranoid, trigger-happy cops.

At a time like this, when so much awfulness is happening seemingly at once, such as Baghdad, Nice, and Dallas/Baton Rouge, what’s most important is that we all keep the focus on the instruments of death—bombs, trucks and guns, respectively—and not the killers or motives.

Right, because the truck-driver in Nice is completely equivalent with American’s pathological, endemic gun crisis.

The only purpose of a bomb is to cause death and destruction. However, it’s already illegal for most people to produce or possess a bomb.

Trucks have a multitude of legitimate uses that are useful to society and do not result in death.

That leaves guns, which are both legal for the average citizen to possess AND are produced and marketed almost exclusively for the purpose of causing death (human or animal).

It turns out that different things are different. Amazing, isn’t it?

I’m glad so many of our greyed-out commenters realize that the important thing to do at this moment when we have so few details is point a finger at some third party that almost certainly had no direct involvement in this situation and blame them entirely.

Recipient of blame may vary depending on who you plan to vote for in November.

I know this won’t be popular, but facts are important in times of hysteria.

The number of people killed by guns is at its lowest level since the 50's. It’s plummeted since it peaked in 93.

The number of people, black, white, or whatever killed by polics, is at an all time low.

The number of cops killed in the line of duty is at an all time low.

Our awareness is at an all time high thanks to wall to wall media and a politically charged atmosphere in which everyone has an agenda.

But it’s important to remember that all around, things are getting better, not worse, no matter what our perception is.

There is no official national accounting of officer-involved shootings, never mind killings. What stats we have are based on voluntary reporting by individual departments or volunteers poring over news reports.

That’s got to stop. We can’t get a handle on this until we have some decent data.

      Prove it.

Because if all you’ve got is data voluntarily supplied by the cops, and independent estimates strongly suggest that they’re underreporting, we have a serious problem.
