It’s been amazing to see the usual post terrorist attack narrative go from “It couldn’t possibly have something to do with Islam, what are you talking about?!” to “These attacks happened because they were men. Masculinity, not religious ideology had everything to do with it.”

Like... I’m not a fan of negative manifestations of masculinity in any way shape or form, but maybe it’s a liiiiiiiiitle disingenuous to draw a line between terror attacks and “manspreading”.

We get it. Not all Muslims are terrorists, or silently support terrorism. But in the furious attempts to pretend that Islamic ideology has nothing to do with the current wave of terrorism (because we’ve deemed Islam in all its forms - Wahhabism included - to be Less Privileged and thus utterly immune from critique), we’re reaching pretty far to pin blame on anything else.

Meanwhile, the assholes committing these attacks are telling us why they’re doing them (a toxic and horrific interpretation of theology), and we’re telling them “No, no, that can’t be it.”

ISIS claiming this guy does not mean he was a radical islamic terrorist. That’s why the French government is dubious and investigating the claim.

I think folks are referring to the correlation between mass violence and a history of violence against women, not “manspreading”. It’s also something that is sometimes combined with radicalization.

As you know, in the US men and boys go on killing sprees at fast-food restaurants, post offices, movie theaters, schools, shopping malls, work places, public protests, gas stations, government buildings etc. not because they are inspired by religion but because they have become enraged by the kinds of problems, setbacks and disappointments that most of us are able to push past everyday. We do not know what inspired this French man to kill. However, early reports indicate that he had mental health issues and was not religious. And there is as yet no evidence that he was inspired by ISIS or any other terrorist group.

Being a misogynistic douchebag who suddenly decides to kill a lot of people is a form of radicalization, I suppose, but not the kind they are thinking of...

I claim responsibility for all random acts of kindness toward homeless people. You’re welcome, everybody.

Also, every time you drop toast and it lands butter side up, I’m taking credit for that, too.

Rukmini Callimachi also points out that they called him a “soldier” rather than a “supporter.” San Bernardino was “supporter,” Orlando was a “soldier.” So who knows.

Like so many soldiers, he was drafted and had no choice in the matter.

Innovative to draft him after he was already dead.

I burnt the toast this morning. ISIS released a statement claiming responsibility. The Feds are investigating whether there’s any sign that any of my other kitchen appliances have been radicalized.

Naturally. The Feds have to wait long enough for you to forget what appliances actually do so as not to cause you any undue alarm.

Normally, I’d be like ok, sure ISIS is behind it. I don’t really know though. The asshole who did it, had a record of nervous breakdowns, volatility, theft, threats, and violence.

It could just be, this guy has a psychotic break, and kills a ton of people. Since he was a tunisian native, that might have been all it took for ISIS to go, yeah that was us.

This is what I find hilarious about this. They took so long to make this claim, and because of that a relative of the attacker had the opportunity to say, quote

Bouhlel was not religious. He did not go to the mosque, he did not pray, he did not observe Ramadan. He drank alcohol, ate pork and took drugs. This is all forbidden under Islam. He was not a Muslim, he was a shit. He beat his wife, my cousin, he was a nasty piece of work.

Makes it perfectly clear how opportunistic these bastards are.

Yes, the attacker was a complete piece of shit, but his wife’s cousin’s statement hardly settles the question of motive.

Cousin might be lying to protect her and her children, or (given that the wife left some time ago) the cousin might simply be unaware that the attacker had recently well...“found Mohammad,” so to speak.
