The channel probably won’t be returning anyway as this coup, which appears to have been a last gasp of the military to remove Erdogan, will give the president the excuses he needs to complete his purges of political rivals and take over the rest of the press and dissolve what remains of the secular democracy and replace it with an Islamist autocracy.

Guy is pretty much an enactment of a 21st century playbook of how the Nazis came to power:

1: Prey on fears of an ethnic minority (in this case Kurds)

2: Gain control of government under seemingly moderate banner (The ‘Justice and Development’ Party)

3: Increase the power of the executive at the expense of the legislature (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/may…)

4: Purge anyone who may present a threat and neuter the military (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-eur…)

6: Install yourself as de facto autocrat under the illusion of a parliamentary democracy

Only confirming what we, sadly, all knew: the Turks are not secularists. Had the coup materialized back in 03 with Operation Sledgehammer, MAYBE it would have succeed, but today not a chance.

The turkish military has proven its impotence in domestic policy by being unable to force the AK government to close the Syrian border as arms flooded to the islamists.

I’m sure the more liberal elements in Istanbul, and conspiracy minded people in general, will call this a false flag to allow Edrogan to consolidate his power and be president 4 life. The more logical explanation is that the military went off half cocked while he was vacationing and did not coordinate well enough to pull off the coup and were blind to the unfortunate fact that the populace was not behind them.

  While I have to say that the notion of a coup disturbs me I knew that they had to win because if they didn’t there would not only be hell to pay but that the repression WOULD BE SEVERE, BRUTAL AND WOULD LEAVE TURKEY IN THE GRIPS OF AN ATOCRACY! This is the worst possible outcome. God help the Turks I know. I am sure that they will be on the first plane to Germany.

Once upon a time, you could seize the national television station and go about your coup d’etat in peace. Ironic that the Internet, which was so broadly envisioned as the means to democratize the planet for the better, has also succeeded in giving authoritarians a louder voice than they’ve had in decades. When we predicted a new world order, the triumph of democracy and the “end of history,” we never considered the possibility that so much of the masses of the world would reject freedom and democracy for parochialism and rule by strongmen. Time makes fools of us all.

I guess I have been living under a rock. I consider myself much more well informed than the average American especially on world events(though that can be accomplished by simply knowing of 1 current event internationally a year) though I had no idea there was any kind of unrest within Turkey. Is the rest of the world blind-sided by this as well? I’m aware the Turkish military has a history of this but generally there are some major events that lead up to this. Maybe there has been and its just been lost in the shuffle of the million other insane things that have transpired this year across the globe? Or maybe I’m just not paying enough attention? Please, someone tell me how to do it right.

My Turkish friends are on FB calling this ‘coup’ completely orchestrated by Erdogan, and essentially a ploy to get civilians to react and get killed (and kill each other). They are urging each other to not play his game and to stay home and quiet. I feel for them. Such chaos.
