‘People are frighteningly complacent when it comes to their “preference,” especially when that preference aligns with greater societal stereotypes.’

I don’t know... I mean is that something you can expect people to really control? Sexual attraction seems to be in large part hardwired. If you’re attracted to short people, should you try to be attracted to tall people out of a sense of fairness?

I get that for a lot of people it goes farther than that, and that’s not cool, I’m just wondering where the line between genuine preference and racism is.

Your post underscores why the concept is worth studying.

A lot of people have thoughts on the topic. Serious study and analysis can move us closer to conclusions.

To what end, though? What kind of meaningful conclusion could we draw from this study?

ETA: I’m not saying we shouldn’t study it, just that there isn’t much that can come of it, IMO.

I’m a college instructor (science), and frankly I see absolutely nothing wrong with the course or the course content. In fact I think that Prof. Nolan has done a far better than average job of making his expectations clear, and also in terms of creating a safe classroom space to talk about difficult and contentious issues.

Nolan sounds like a fantastic and talented teacher. I bet I’d be better on issues of race and gender if I took his class.

I was thinking the same thing—he did a much better job than I ever did with that statement on his syllabus, and I often taught very contentious material (English literature).

Frankly, I assumed most of the discussion in the comments would be around the attempted government infringement on academic freedom, so I’m surprised most of the discussion is on the subject matter of the apparently controversial text.

What the hell is happening in the US? I’m now retired and not American anyway, but if I were, I’d be very concerned about this very real attempt to infringe on academic freedom and what it could mean for the reputation of American scholarship in the international community.

What troubles me is the very direct threats to university funding based on one man’s total misunderstanding of the purpose, content, and processes of higher education.

Anything less than compassion for disparity amongst gays is, in my opinion, counterintuitive.

Thinking your group (no matter what group one belongs to) is free from bigotry isn’t counterinuitive, it is an escape from reality. All groups have their bigotry. According to polling, African Americans are less accepting of homosexuality than whites and Hispanics. I know people from Eastern Europe who acted shocked about American racism, but bring up the Roma or Albanians, and get ready for a rant.

African Americans are less accepting of homosexuality

And? I don’t understand this line of thinking. Africans aren’t a mass of people that exercise any significant power to make the lives of white people harder, especially those white gay men (who are often agents in gentrification). I think that is a distraction and in N. America I am black first, fuck the dick.

ETA: Also, no-one will ride or die like a Jamaican woman. Bad gyals, period.

LOL at polling African Americans and saying they are less accepting of homosexuality than whites and hispanics.

Those words don’t do their level of acceptance justice. A gay black adolescent has a choice of being black or being a gay homeless black. In bible thumping black homes, there’s never a need for a young man to have a condom, so there’s also never a need to own them, thus the increase in neglected aids cases.

Maybe he’s worried that the Grindr data used in the study wasn’t thoroughly anonymized - not an unreasonable concern for a GOP politician who pushes “family values.”

As an avid user of the sites, I find the white queens in Toronto are probably still like the way this queen wrote. Black queens that climb into white queens or let one climb into them all have stories. I just don’t sex with people lately. It’s mostly Ms. Palmer for me.

ETA: The action of BLM-TO was very relevant to the whitewashing of queer history that is ongoing in Toronto and unceasing on all cultural fronts within the Eurocentric Ocular spaces we occupy as inhabitants of N. America in its postmodern age.

I’ve never understood what’s supposed to come from this self-flagellation circlejerk. Is an enlightened university professor telling me preference = racism supposed to magically change my mind? Is it gonna make me wanna fuck every color under the rainbow cause I should find every diverse trait equally beautiful? Sorry, that’s kinda.. not.. how life works.

You can kick and scream and cry bloody racism until your hair falls out, but sexual preference is something that will always exist. Stay tuned for the lectures on how you’re fat-shaming cause you don’t want to fuck a 400 pound guy and ageist cause you’re not down with gnawing on some 60-year-old’s bone.

What? It’s a class on race and ethnicity... should sexual preference be excluded from the class simply because debating it isn't going to make people change who they f*ck? Well f*ck those assholes for making me study math, because I still don't want to fuck calculus.

The relevance and necessity of this area of study will now be demonstrated by the number of commenters here who will try to defend their preference for White and/or Asian (female) partners using nothing remotely approaching credible evidence or logic.

For that matter, you could say that exclusively gay or hetero people are sexist. Or people who aren’t attracted to ugly people are looks-ist. Or people who don’t want to fuck a septuagenarian are ageist. Or people who won’t date amputees are ableist. Are your sexual attractions free of any bias? Has anyone’s ever been in the history of humanity?

Why does a nature vs society discussion mean that preferences are automatically racist? Me thinks the lady doth protest too much.

This is so ridiculous! I don’t want to have sex with a woman, does that make me sexist or does it make me a misogynist? Do I have to fuck a woman to prove I don’t hate women? So why then should I be expected to fuck a guy from every race to prove I'm not racist? It's a fucking sexual preference. I am a Latino man and I prefer sex with other Latin men. I don't wanna to fuck a white, black, Asian dude I just want a beautiful uncut Latino man that's all.

There's nothing wrong with that. Why would you be offended about a discussion attempting to analyze how much of that is just your nature/preference and how much of that could possibly have been molded by societal influence? No one said you need to f*ck people you don't want to f*ck in order to be a good person.

First of all, this is the internet and we’re (presumably) all adults here. You can type “fuck.” Trust me, we’ve all heard it and we know what you mean.

Secondly, while the professor in this class might be attempting to do what you described, the vast majority of people simplify it as “you’re racist if you’re not sexually attracted to everything!” Heck, just look at the other comments around here. So yes, that’s a problem (not that you shouldn’t be able to talk about it, especially in a college class.)
