    In a perfect world, we’d be able to say “All Lives Matter” with a straight face, because all lives would actually be treated like they matter. Until then, “Black Lives Matter” needs to be a part of the national conversation. Maybe people who don’t understand it would be more comfortable if the slogan was, “Black Lives Matter, Too” although it doesn’t exactly have the same ring to it, and further cements the “otherness” that is put upon Black Lives by All Lives (other than Black Lives).

      I know what you’re saying. But I think if a person is of the mindset of interpreting “Black Lives Matter” as a competition, then calling it “Black Lives Matter too” probably wouldn’t open their minds any further.

      Making the jump from “Black Lives Matter” to “Oh, so white lives don’t!?!?” is just so absurd that we just need to accept that these people are trolling the movement, and there’s no re-wording that would solve the issue for them.

      Agreed. All lives do matter, but if you are only pointing that out as a response to BLM and not in the general context of “let’s help humanity” then you are just being a jerk. BLM is focused on a very specific issue: that of black lives being systematically devalued. Don’t derail that conversation. If you want to talk about access to medicine or clean water or some other broad topic there is a time and a place for that. Even if you want to talk about police brutality in general or gun violence in general there are better outlets than steamrolling BLM.
