It shows how little Rivera bothered investigating this if he thinks Ailes’ lack of being “flirty” is somehow connected to this. Every woman who’s talked about this publicly has been very clear that Ailes was extraordinarily businesslike in his demand for sex in exchange for favors.

I’ll never understand how the “Well, he never sexually harassed me, so there is no way he sexually harassed anyone else” argument is supposed to work. I mean, Pablo Escobar never sold drugs to me but that isn’t really proof that he never sold drugs to anyone. Ted Bundy never killed anyone that I knew personally but that doesn’t mean that he didn’t kill anyone at all.

Yeah those are extreme examples but my point is just that forming a list of people that your friend HASN’T harassed isn’t really proof that he hasn’t harassed anyone. It’s not even suggestive really.

There are a lot of people that seem to lack the capacity to imagine a human experience that deviates significantly from their own. The sad part is that they are unable to recognize this in themselves or others like themselves.

I literally laughed out loud at this: “I mean, Pablo Escobar never sold drugs to me...”

That is a singularly perfect argument for everyone I know who has expressed doubt that Ailes harassed Gretchen Carlson because all the other blondies on Fox swore he never groped them.

It always amazes me how friends, family members, and colleagues try to defend murderers, sexual predators, etc. with the “I’ve known them for X years” defense. If you aren’t someone who they would murder or sexually assault, how would their immoral and/or criminal activity ever come up? Void of logic.

When I’ve known someone for years who I’ve found out does something heinous, my first reaction is to say, “I’ve known him for years” too... but not as a defense, I’m just amazed I’ve known someone for years who’s been so terrible and I wasn’t even aware.

No, it’s cognitive dissonance. Not to excuse Jabba The Ailes, but think about it for a minute. Think about your brother or your bestie, someone you spent the 4th of July with, sipping cocktails, eating barbecue, playing cards, dancing to oldies. You grew up together now your kids are growing up with his kids. He has a spare key to your crib & your car. You trust him to watch your house when you go on holiday, to watch your kids when you & the wife go away for the weekend. Then today, you woke up & his face was all over the news because he’d been accused of using child porn. Or trafficking little girls. Or forcing women who work for him to service him sexually in order to stay employed.

Would you believe it at face value? Would your first reaction be “That fucking bastard!”

Or would the high-pitched whine of cognitive dissonance inside your skull from all the positive things you know about him block all the incoming negative messages, all of which are from people you’ve never met?

I’m not saying you’re a dumbass or anything @Reggie. But I know that most people don’t do well at all with cognitive dissonance. They’ll do anything to discount the conflicting info so they can maintain the equilibrium of their world view. But shouldn’t empirical facts trump personal beliefs?

Even when the videotape shows the cops shooting a Black man in his car, choking a Black man to death, shooting a Black man who’s running away from them, then dropping a taser next to his body — rather than believe what they see with their own eyes, Whitefolks STILL tell themselves & each other “that nigger must’ve done something wrong”. Because they don’t want to face the fact that more than a few cops are racists murderers.

Don’t believe me? Turn on C-Span right now, it’s 7:28am EST. Listen to the comments from the Whites calling in to talk about Obama’s remarks at the Dallas funeral service where he claimed that “We are not as divided as we seem.” Even Dubya showed up to get himself some shine & add his 2 cents. And I am thisclose to doing a shot of tequila at 7:30 in the am to keep from screaming at the t.v. & scaring my cats.

Reality in 21st century America is not for pussies. It’s so much easier to retreat into Pokémon Go.

I guess it is, which is just as empty a anniversary as the cellar itself was that day. If that event didn’t prove just how much of a colossal asshole Geraldo Rivera is I don’t know what will.

      ROFL @ your screen name!

But in all seriousness, Geraldo used to be a good journalist back when he worked for Eyewitness News in NY. I’m dating myself, but back in the early 1970s, he won a Peabody award for his investigative reporting on the hellacious conditions at a Staten Island facility for the mentally retarded (that’s what they were called back then — don’t judge!) called the Willowbrook State School. Here’s an excerpt from that tv special: http://geraldo.com/page/willowbro…

The people there were treated worse than zoo animals. 100% of the patients contracted hepatitis within 6 mos. of admission. Many were left wandering around naked. His reporting on that place got Willowbrook shut down & got those people transferred to proper facilities. So Geraldo used to have more than a tad bit of integrity & journalistic skills back in the day.

You know what I’ve learned over the years? That you never really know what evil lurks in the hearts of men. Haven’t we all been deceived over the decades? Haven’t we learned from Bill Cosby and Jimmy Saville? What about John Wayne Gacy? Do we not remember the time Kurt Loder went on MTV to dismiss the gossip that Bruce Springsteen would never ever cheat on his wife by hooking up with the back up singer? How did that exclusive scoop turn out?

I’ve given up on vouching for people. I really don’t recommend anyone vouching for me.

I used to hear that on the old radio broadcasts of “The Shadow” back in the ‘30's and ‘40's. Thanks for bringing back the memories, friend.

Analogies are to Geraldo, as irony is to Alanis. Your move.
