“Since it was announced, people (if men actually count as people) have been losing their shit over the new Ghostbusters reboot simply because the Ghostbusters are all women this time around.”

Sure, it couldn’t be because they took a beloved franchise, sucked the soul out of it, made everything neon and cast it with Saturday Night Live actors.

No, the only, only reason this movie could ever possibly be criticized is because men are evil troglodytes.

Nevermind that in the last few years any number of franchises have gotten shitty reboots and flopped epically, this one is different ‘because misogyny’.

Those other shitty reboots - that starred men - did not get anywhere near this level of organized vitriol.

No, the real question is will this movie ruin the childhoods of men deep into their thirties and forties:

i watched his video after the fallout and i saw nothing wrong with it, he didn’t even mention the female cast. he was quite calm and reasonable, it certainly wasn’t sexist in the least. after seeing the movie, i wish i had listened to him, it’s awful.

Preemptive critiques are still a cop-out, especially from someone who makes a living from reviewing video games he hates.

    Real beacon of courage there.

Of course, his film about four women (which is admirable) still trades on the “white women are educated, black women have ‘street smarts’” trope (which is... not).

I’d forgotten a black woman was in it because I never see her in the adverts.

Yeah, that bugged me too. I know the original had the black guy be the blue collar guy, but since they were swapping up the chromosome, they could have tried mixing that up too.

Why? Because by playing coy (AKA being a dick) on a franchise as big as this the studio doesn’t have to “offend” straight people or turn off gay people. Pretty simple.

Really it’s a miracle any progress is made in Hollywood at all.

China is often the answer to most things.

Though we’ve definitely snuck in some gay characters on movies sent overseas (anyone know what’s happening with Star Trek? I guess that’d be easy enough for them to edit out. But a gay male (Asian!) protagonist in the main cast should be an interesting one for them).

I say “Keep everyone guessing.” That way gay women and straight men who are prone to fantacizing about movie characters, think they have a shot and can still get their jollies off. And since it seems up for debate, she could be bi and everyone is happy.

If you’re not prone to such fantacizing, why would you care? It’s not really relevant to your interests.

It’s simply about representation. We have no problem with every damn blockbuster featuring a heterosexual relationship. We’ve conditioned people with heterosexual relationships, it would be nice if we could change it up.

Fair enough. Gay women don’t really get real representation in the “So I’m gay? What’s it to you?” way.

But by the same token, if what we’re talking about isn’t a big deal, then why shouldn’t Holtzmann be gay?

I tend to think it’s because of the toy tie-in. Stupid as it may be, I can see the studio and toy manufacturer saying “keep it down” because they’re worried that some parents won’t want to by their kid a “gay” doll.* And I can definitely visualize some parent walking into WalMart and saying “NOPE, not on your life!” when their kid want the Kate McKinnon action figure. A theory, but parents have flipped out for less.

*HAS there been an “openly gay doll” for kids? Silly question, right, but just wondering...

While that may make for a nice conspiracy theory, the truth is that it all boils down to money. If you are going to make the most money in a globalized economy, you cater to what the rules are in major population hubs such as Russia and China. Banning movies in major countries like China is a huge hit to the bottom line. If you think an aspect of a character isn’t completely central to the plot, why risk putting it in the movie, when it might get the release banned in major markets?

If she’s the Egon counterpart, then yeah, gay as a woman’s softball coach at a girls Catholic school. All of the scenes with Egon and Slimer were coded gay scenes, with the exception of the one where he “slimed” Egon’s pants. That one was pretty obvious.

I’m a guy (I just checked) and I’m decidedly apprehensive about the reboot since I’m supposed to like it, like it’s somehow supposed to be good for me. So I’m trying hard to suspend judgment and hoping it gets good reviews.

Fact is that most of what gets churned out from Hollywood these days is crap. Should Ghostbusters turns out to be crap, that will only be par for the course.

It’s actually a good idea but the commercials (Spike Lee, NBA Playoffs, really?) and the buildup are unnecessary. Maybe a summer blockbuster release was a bad idea. Maybe I’m not in the target market.

Whatever. Shouldn’t this be on Jezebel?

I never get this complaint. Gawker is a general interest site — it’s not focused on men and it has a large population of female readers.

Women are half the population. There’s no reason why stories by or about them should be relegated to spaces that focus on women, any more than Shonda Rhimes shows should only appear on BET.

Since when did Hollywood summer movies not get “buildup”? And why should it be on Jezebel? It’s a highly anticipated movie, whether people love it or hate it, and it has a lot of high-profile stars.
