I don’t see how this is a crazy thing. It’s not like it was an autonomous AI killing machine. It’s like people who freak out over drones. Just because it’s remote controlled versus a person in it doesn’t make it any worse. Likewise, just because they delivered an explosive via a robot versus someone just fucking throwing the thing doesn’t make it somehow crazier.

The only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a remote control robot bomb.

Pretty sure once he said “I wanted to do this to kill white people and police” he went from suspect to “yep, that guy did it”

I am okay with the police taking this “suspect” out after hours of trying to negotiate and Micah saying had bombs all around the city, he could set off.

Btw here’s the guy. Literally the black Dylan Roof.

hmmmm, what did I see in there? “Melanin the God Particle”?

Are we sure Gurv/Hoyo Africa didn’t go on a killing spree last night?

The differnce is Dylann Roof is seen as a lone actor.

Micah will be seen as part of the Black Hive Mind, representing all black people in America, and all organizations that represent black people.

You will also see reprisals against innocent blacks througout the country in the coming weeks.

      Unforseen Consequences.

If a guy is barricaded in a room with IEDs, send in a robot to explode all ordinances. What’s the problem?

There is no problem. I think most everyone generally agrees that this was the right thing to do in this situation.

But it is a noteworthy escalation in domestic law enforcement tactics. A culturally important moment that may have significant future consequences.

Yeah but it wasn’t a guy in a room with IEDs and they didn’t send in a robot to explode the ordinances; they sent in the robot AS the ordinance. It’s an important distinction.

How is this not an extrajudicial killing? He was a suspect, not convicted of anything. If negotiations break down, don't you just wait for the guy to get tired or hungry? Why do this, if not a police revenge rampage?

‘Suspect’ goes out the window in an active shooter situation, and by all accounts he was still exchanging fire while cornered

This is so stupid it actually deserves to be starred more. .... everyone has been taught that when negotiating with an armed suspect just wait till lunch time and they’ll walk right out to get the pizza and BAM! that’s when you get them... right? no?

To be fair, this is hardly an escalation from dropping bombs out of helicopters in the 80s.

To be fair, this is much better.

‘The resulting explosions ignited a fire that eventually destroyed approximately 65 nearby houses. The firefighters, who had earlier deluge-hosed the MOVE members in a failed attempt to evict them from the building, stood by as the fire caused by the bomb engulfed the first house and spread to others, having been given orders to let the fire burn. Despite the earlier drenching of the building by firefighters, officials said that they feared that MOVE would shoot at the firefighters.[6][18][19][20] Eleven people (John Africa, five other adults and five children aged 7 to 13) died in the resulting fire and more than 250 people were left homeless.[21] Ramona Africa, one of the two survivors, stated that police fired at those trying to escape.[22]’

Police forces shouldn’t have the equipment or the clearance to bomb anybody, whether out of a helicopter or via drone.

I have my new heavy duty flame suit out and ready for what I’m about to say, so here goes. That is actually a pretty unique and efficient way of using technology for ending a threat. We all know that police officers are incredibly poor shots. I would much rather them use this as a last ditch effort when there is no threat of collateral damage as opposed to officers firing bullets wildly where the potential to hit innocent bystanders is much much higher.

This. Wild shots can travel pretty far. The suspect reportedly claimed to have a bomb on him, which means they couldn’t safely approach him anyways, and he wouldn’t surrender. Basically that leaves two choices: kill suspect with gunfire, then blow his IED up after he is dead, or try to blow his IED up while he is alive, and kill him in the proccess. The second option is much safer for the police officers and any civilians still in range of stray bullets.

As a counterpoint, they executed a man without giving him due process. We generally don’t give police these powers sans a clear and present danger to officers or civilians.

We don’t know what the situation was when this all went down, but if this guy was barricaded, alone, without the ability to immediately harm another person, then deadly force was likely not a reasonable response.

As a similar hypothetical, if this guy had made it home, and been barricaded, alone, in his home, would yoube okay with the police ordering a drone strike on his home to kill him?

The suspect deceased as a result of detonating the bomb.

Grammatically correct, but you don’t often hear deceased used as an active verb, very odd choice IMO.

Oh, I’ve noticed some really jarring grammatical quirks on the CNN website lately where they have obviously scrubbed the story by replacing “upsetting” words with more neutral language but didn’t bother to proofread the surrounding context. Along the lines of:

“The BLM march was in protest of two unarmed black men that were recently died during encounters with police.”
