I’ll see your “Putin is Breaking the Internet” and raise you a Putin is just a pussycat in shirtless Bolshevik clothing.

(really this comment is meaningless i’m scared and no longer know how to function without the internet despite living without it the first two decades and a half of life)

The [daft] mindset behind gratuitous whoring *Like* posts -like the one i’m replying to- are doing more to break the net than Putin or his contemporaries could ever dream of. Enjoy your moment of meaningless net fame.

That is the type of bold, magical authoritarianism that makes Trump’s stubby appendages rock hard. I expect lavish praise of Putin’s new law from Donald before the week is out.

I’m sure the guy tasked with this project is home right now, kissing his wife goodbye, because in two weeks he is a dead man.

I know two people who predicted the fall of the Soviet Union well before the wall actually came down. One was a Defense Intelligence Agency analyst whose predictions along this line pretty much stalled his career for several years.

But the other was the head of a magnet school for science and math who was given the task of showing the Soviet Minister of Education and his party around the school. When he showed them the computer lab, the Minister asked (through an interpreter) why the students were working independently at their terminals, instead of on set exercises led by the teacher. The head said that some of the students had already surpassed the instructor in some respects, and that they learned best when given the freedom to pursue their own interests. The Minister responded that this would never be allowed in the Soviet Union.

Shortly after, the head told me that the Soviet Union was doomed to fail in the information age. For many of the same reasons, Putin and Russia will also fail ultimately.

In a lot of ways China does that right now, except with this weird quasi-free market system ..that’s basically kleptocracy and patronage on overdrive...along with the State being able to manipulate markets and currency valuations in a heavy handed way.

It’ll be interesting to see where this goes...

Yes. I’m old enough to remember the experts proclaiming that this would be the “Japanese Century,” with their paternalistic form of capitalism and strong work ethic and keiretsu (interlocked companies)...and of course, as Kissinger said of Brazil, it is “the country of the future, and always will be.”

    Questions:

Is Putin stupid enough to actually think much of this is feasible?

Is it just him starting out with an implausible design which he will then haggle down to the biggest surveillance state he can possibly install?

Or, is he under some political pressure to look like he is being the biggest baddest Russian bear he can be to ensure the safety of Russian people against possible attacks from ISIS, etc.?

Does nobody here remember a few months ago when Clinton said she wants to create a Manhattan Project-style initiative to break encryption?

    Is that not a concern?

This is a preview of what we might get here in November. The President walks into a government agency and orders them to create something that doesn’t really exist and doesn’t make any sense and gives them like eleven minutes to finish it. This is called strong, decisive leadership and it definitely won’t be used as a pretext to harass and intimidate companies who will inevitably fail to comply at the President’s discretion.

So how long until Putin gets the fuck out of power in Russia? Cause he’s been there for what seems like a lifetime already, and I tried Googling when his term would end and not even Google seems to know.
Realistically, will Putin EVER leave power in Russia? Or is he gonna be one of those people that’s just gonna quietly continue to control and influence things for decades to come until his vision of Soviet Union 2.0 is attained?

Dictators find ways around term limits, usually through “constitutional amendments” passed by their puppet legislatures. Realistically, Putin will never leave voluntarily.

He’ll be in power there as long as he wants. When he steps down he just uses a sock puppet like Medvedev. And yes, he’s going to stick around until he reconstitutes as much of the old Russian/Soviet empire as he can. He could spend a fraction of his billions on placing a heroic statue of himself in every city, town and village square in Russia, but that’s not how a true megalomaniacal sociopath rolls.
