Cyclists in NYC are FAR MORE DANGEROUS TO PEDESTRIANS THAN CARS. They blow lights, go the wrong way down 1 way streets, CYCLE ON THE GODDAMNED SIDEWALK, and generally ignore the fact that, yes, they are subject to traffic laws. The death of this cyclist is sad, and should be properly investigated, but the ticket blitz on cyclists is absolutely justified.

In the last 5 years, I’ve narrowly avoided being hit by cars while on the sidewalk or crossing an intersection once. The number of times on sidewalks alone I’ve narrowly avoided being hit by cyclists is literally in the hundreds.

Yes, but if you get hit by a bicycle, you will live. There’s an order of magnitude difference in the danger to pedestrians.

Agreed, but the point he’s making is that cyclists have no regard for traffic laws, despite being vehicles.

While in this instance the fault seems to have been with the driver, there are countless times I’ve seen cyclists breaking the law in dangerous ways, and then flipping off cars that endanger them, despite obeying the law perfectly.

This is sadly the attitude of the public; that it is these darn annoying cyclists causing cyclist deaths.
It is the people in the 2 ton metal boxes on wheels that have the greater responsibility.

P.S. If you ever get stopped for no bell or something bullshit like that, always tell the cop that it was just stolen, like 10 minutes previously and you’re like super pissed off about it, you take bike safety super seriously and all that. You’ll get a pass.

And it’s an endless loop of chicken-and-egg fuckery. Motorists drive like shit, so cyclists use that as an excuse to ride like d-bags which pisses off more drivers and so on and so on.....

No excuse for a driver to ever go after a cyclist. Just sayin’ the level of road rage on both sides gets bizarre.

      This is what actually happens:

      1. There’s some tragedy (a pedestrian was killed! A biker was killed!).

      2. People want “something to be done.”

      3. The captains get told to step up ticketing for traffic violations. That’s really the only short-term option to “get something done.”

      4. Tickets are going out EVERYWHERE. Tons and tons of tickets. There’s cops on every block waiting to hand out tickets. And they need to get results to show “something’s been done.”

      5. However, car drivers in general aren’t breaking many laws. It’s almost impossible to run a red light or speed, for instance, in that ridiculous traffic. So they get tickets, but not as many as you’d expect.

      6. Bikers and pedestrians, however, ROUTINELY break just about every traffic law out there. I rarely see a biker NOT violate some pretty significant traffic law.

      7. So you get tons of tickets to bikers and pedestrians.

It’s the right move for the wrong reasoning.

The ratio of cyclists I encounter to cyclists I see disobeying traffic laws is about 2:1. I’d love to see cyclists needing valid insurance to drive on public roads, as well as a bike tag. If you want to be a vehicle on the roadway, you need to play by the same rules.

Enforcement needs to be stepped up as well.

Seriously? Insurance for riding a bicycle? Well I think people should need insurance for child rearing, if it grows up to be an asshole we all deserve compensation. Also, I think people should have insurance for breathing in public, what if they give me a cold! Everything but the food sucks more in big cities, deal with it.

I despise the city, rural life man!

Wouldn’t you want insurance if you’re riding on public roads? The rates would be low since you have a small exposure / small risk, and if something happened you would be covered. We’re not talking auto rates where you’re insuring a $30,000 vehicle and $2 mil in liability.

What the fuck is wrong with the police in this country? You can’t be black, you can’t be brown, you can’t wear a turban, you can’t have resting bitch face, you CAN’T RIDE YOUR FUCKING BIKE without being harassed by some authoritative asshat with a badge?!

Hey, hey, you can have a resting bitch face. That is allowed, the FBI didn’t even consider that as a charge against Hillary.

Actually, resting bitch face does greatly increase your chance of getting a ticket. My anecdotal data? I have been pulled over for speeding probably... 5 times, I have received one ticket (and it was for the light over my license plate being out). My friend with resting bitch face has been pulled over an equivalent amount of times and was ticketed each. and. every. damn. time.

Good old NYPD. If they find the driver, it will only be to remind him to use his turn signal before swerving into a bike lane and killing a cyclist. Don’t want to surprise the other car drivers.

My two cents: Cars are more dangerous to people walking or biking. But many cyclists believe they are vehicles when they want to share the road, and then shouldn’t have to obey traffic laws when inconvenient, because they aren’t cars.

It’s one or the other. You wanna share the street? Then don’t run a red light like a prick.

Agreed, cars can be dangerous but that is just because drivers are driving like clueless dumbasses (which is bad), but cyclists are making conscious decision to actively disobey the law and making conscious decision to terrify people and be aggressive.

It’s not that we “believe” that, it’s what the law says. You wanna keep the revocable privilege of driving? Don’t run a red light like a prick.

Good, it’s about time. I’ve seen people on bikes do all sorts of stupid things and a crackdown needs to happen. The rules of the road are for everyone. That said, horrible timing considering the accident. I hope they catch the guy.
